POETRY SLAM! 🎤

FEATURING: MayaSpoken

Maya Namatovu hopes that her poetry inspires you to be a voice of disruption, advocacy, and change towards liberation for all oppressed peoples. None of us are free until we are all free.

Maya is a Ugandan-Jamaican poet based on the unceded, unsurrendered Territory of the Anishinaabe Algonquin Nation. She is raising two beautiful and brilliant babies and holds multiple poetry slam titles, including two-time canadian individual poetry slam champion (2023,2025). Her poetry is published in Big Whoopie Deal, Bywords, and international anthologies “De las Periferias a las Fronteras” and “Poesía Y Disidencias” (2024) alongside very powerful thinkers and writers.

it’s the most wonderful time of the year & we’re back and it is time to Slam!! join us December 20th, we still have some details pending but our competitor registration form is linked in our bio! only 12 Spots available!

SLAM RULES:

Poems must be your own original work.

You have 3 minutes to deliver your poem with a 10 second grace period. Atter 3 minutes and 10 seconds, 0.5 points is deducted every 10 seconds over time.

No costumes or props: An object that all performers can access is not considered a prop (ie. the mic stand). It is a prop if only you have access to the object (ie., the poem mentions glasses and the poet points to their own glasses).

No musical accompaniment (other than your voice)

No hate speech: No sexism, racism, homophobia, or transphobia - basically, don't be a jerk.

Memorization is not required. Poets can bring paper, book, or a phone to read from.

You will be scored on a scale from 1-10. The poets with the highest scores make it into round two. In the event of a tie in round two, there will be a sudden death round with the tied poets. Please come with at least two poems prepared.
