Black Box Productions, located in Fredericton, NB, is St. Thomas University’s home for theatre. Black Box Productions is St Thomas University’s home for theatre.

We bring together students, staff and members of the community to create bold and relevant theatre. Open to all, our company is committed to fostering inclusivity, diversity, and equity—recognizing that this action requires an ongoing commitment to the ever-evolving nature of our community. Through mentorship, training, and collaboration, we aim to be a meaningful part of the broader theatre community, all while recognizing the influential history of theatre at St. Thomas. How do we do this? GROW: Actively pursue collaborations, productions and training that encourages inclusivity, diversity, and equity. LEARN: Engage diverse professional theatre artists and artistic organizations across the Fredericton community and beyond to direct, teach workshops and share skills. PLAY: Create diverse and exhilarating theatre that challenges, inspires, and entertains. LEAD: Foster student leadership through student-led initiatives and participation in the Black Box Productions Student Advisory Committee which guides the administrative, artistic and policy decisions of the company.

Presented in The Black Box Theatre, April 15-17, 2027.

ABOUT THE PLAY: What happens when we reach the edge of the life we’ve known and decide to step forward anyway? For the final production of our season, we invite you to experience Songs for a New World like never before. Director Vienna Martin presents a q***r-centred reimagining of this exhilarating musical collection: stories about moments of change, choice, rupture, and possibility. Intimate, expansive, joyful, and aching, this production invites us to cross the threshold together and imagine a brand new world.

Presented in the Black Box Theatre, March 22nd, 2027.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM: Black Box Labs is a student-led collective which meets regularly to develop or share in the development of new scripts – from an idea in your mind, to a completed draft on paper. If you're simply interested in scriptwriting, have experience writing plays, or maybe have an idea for a script , Black Box Labs is here to support you!

The program invites actors into the process to work with the scripts, and culminates in a highly-attended public reading of the works in the Black Box Theatre on March 22nd, 2027.

✨Black Box Productions Presents✨: POWERPLAY. Written by Jena Mclean and Directed by Lisa Anne Ross.

Presented in the Black Box Theatre, March 18-20th, 2027, with a special Gala Performance for STU Tommies & UNB Women’s REDS Hockey Teams on March 24th, 2027.

ABOUT THE PLAY: Solo Chicken Productions in partnership with Black Box Productions, The UNB Women’s REDS Hockey Team, and STU Athletics are proud to present their newest creative work, POWERPLAY. Written by New Brunswick playwright Jena McLean in collaboration with Lisa Anne Ross and Solo Chicken Productions, POWERPLAY follows a fictional university women’s hockey team on their hunt for glory. As a new Head Coach attempts to rebuild the program, six players contend with inner demons, external societal forces, and the privilege of pressure.

Combining witty dialogue and ripped-from-real-life-characters with a hockey/physical theatre mash-up, POWERPLAY is a door into the world of women’s hockey, where strength is celebrated and community is key.

Sparked by a friendship between Director Lisa Anne Ross and the UNB Women’s REDS Coach and lifelong hockey pro Sarah Hillworth, POWERPLAY is where theatre and hockey collide.
Playwright Jena McLean and Director Lisa Anne Ross kicked off this project with research, interviews, many hours in a cold rink and most thrillingly, a collaboration with Coach Sarah Hillworth and the UNB Women’s REDS Hockey team, who helped them uncover the power, friendships, heartache and resilience that is at the heart of this sport.

The result is a play that celebrates the tenacity of the women who battled through sexism, lack of support and changing in broom closets to get to the moment where we are today. The PWHL is on the rise, girls’ teams are beginning to get equal ice time, and the culture of hockey is being changed for the better.

✨Black Box Productions Presents✨: SPRING AWAKENING, A New Translation. Translated and Directed by Sophie Brander. Intimacy Coordination by Alex Dawson.

Presented in the Black Box Theatre, January 28-30, 2027

ABOUT THE PLAY: Before it was a hit Broadway musical, it was a radical, banned 1891 play. Now, director and translator Sophie Brander brings a vital new translation of Spring Awakening to the stage, directly from the original German text. This production strips away decades of adaptation to return to the heart of the story: the volatile, beautiful, and tragic awakening of youth in a society that refuses to listen. Supported by intimacy coordinator Alex Dawson, the production ensures a safe, highly collaborative space to bring this intense, emotional, and deeply moving story to life.

✨Black Box Productions Presents✨: TWO BY TWO, A New Musical Workshop. Written and Directed by Samuel Crowell.

Presented in the Ted Daigle Auditorium on December 3–5, 2026.

ABOUT THE PLAY: A bold, joyful reimagining of the Noah’s Ark story, Two by Two is an original musical set in 1960s Canada and told through a fully q***r lens. When a young priest arrives to lead his first parish, he believes that God has called him to the priesthood to save him for the world he was born into. But as he comes to know the members of his congregation, he is drawn into a community that challenges him to discover who he truly is—and the family he may choose for himself.

Blending camp, warmth, humour, and musical vibrancy, Two by Two draws inspiration from the wit and infectious energy of musicals like Hairspray while exploring deeper questions of identity, belonging, exclusion, resilience, and joy. Both entertaining and meaningful, this new work brings a contemporary perspective to a familiar story, centering voices that have too often been erased from history. Join us for a workshop presentation of this exciting work-in-progress.

ABOUT THE PLAY: Renowned theatre artist Ilkay Silk brings Shakespeare into the here and now. Staged at the Black Box Theatre on the St. Thomas University campus, this lively production takes familiar scenes from the Bard and gives them an unconventional twist. Classic Shakespearean language meets contemporary theatrical styling in a bold, playful reimagining that invites audiences to see these timeless works, and their characters, in an entirely new way.

✨Black Box Productions Presents✨: FRACAS. A Play in One Act by Margaret Sweatman. Produced by Chartier Danse, directed by Arne MacPherson, and performed by Marie-Josée Chartier and Sébastien Labelle.

Presented in the Ted Daigle Auditorium on Monday, November 16th, 7:30-8:30pm.

ABOUT THE PLAY: A person dies and splits into two psyches: Bardom (Sébastien Labelle) and Ziggy (Marie-Josée Chartier), two halves of one being together in limbo—the waiting room after death—where the monsters of contemporary life swirl through their overly receptive imaginations. In just one hour, FRACAS takes you on a psychedelic trip through a Wealth Management Convention, a folk festival, family memories, and a war—all inside a divided, short-circuiting mind on its way to infinity. Bardom and Ziggy can only surrender to whatever passes through as they pass away. This is very serious material, delivered by two very funny performers.

✨Black Box Productions Presents✨: SEEING YOU. A staged reading of a New Work by Brianna Lyttle and Directed by Jane Metcalfe.

Presented in the Black Box Theatre, Oct 22-24th, 2026.

ABOUT THE PLAY: In an age where intimacy and connection amongst young adults are guarded by games made of dating apps, curated Instagram pictures, and "lol" bookending each message, what happens when you get a glimpse into the life of the people who you never took the time to notice? Raymond is in his third year of university. He has his circle of friends and that's that—until one night, when he is visited by the sardonic spirit Angel (on the nose, they know). Angel has been sent on a mission to show him all that he doesn't see beyond the cheery façades on the outskirts of his inner circle. Through reliving the moments he never realized he made oversights in, and confronting his own struggles, Raymond is shown the importance of taking the time to see someone and be seen.
