One of the most heartfelt true stories about Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Saab is from his visit to India in the 1990s. During one of his performances in Delhi, a fan approached him backstage, visibly emotional. This fan, a man in his mid-thirties, confessed that he had been battling severe depression and had even contemplated ending his life. However, he stumbled upon Nusrat Saab’s qawwali “Tumhe Dillagi Bhool Jani Padegi” and something in the song awakened his will to live.

The man said, “Your voice felt like someone calling me back to life, as if saying, ‘इस दफ़ा अपना कह के पुकारो, मैं सुन रहा हूँ।’” Nusrat Saab was moved to tears by this confession. He hugged the man and told him, “संगीत अल्लाह का तोहफा है, जो हर दर्द को शिफा बना सकता है। अगर मेरी आवाज़ ने तुम्हें जिंदगी दी है, तो यही मेरी सबसे बड़ी कामयाबी है।” (Music is a gift from God that can heal all pain. If my voice has given you life, that is my greatest success.)
