Maggie Lalonde - Maple Hall, 2552 Old Montreal Road

Handicrafts have always been a big part of Maggie’s life, and she still makes time for them today. The child of Dutch immigrants, she learned cross-stitch and other traditional crafts as a teenager. Every Saturday, she engaged in creative projects with the 4H Club. More recently, Maggie has won awards for her cross-stitch work at the Navan Fair.

Maggie grew up on a local farm and has lived in Cumberland since 1986. Seven years ago, she retired from her administrative career. Not wanting to be “over busy” Maggie balances her days with stitching, baking, gardening and spending time at her cottage.

Maggie is inspired by natural surroundings and works from photographs to capture her subjects in counted threads. She uses coloured cotton floss on pure cotton cloth or linen. Her pieces are modern heirlooms, meant to last forever. Maggie mounts the works on embroidery hoops or in wood, ceramic or bamboo frames.

Favourite subjects are landscapes, florals and animals. Maggie accepts commissions for pet portraits and memorials, lovingly stitching their names on the cloth. She has reproduced treasured family keepsakes and also provides a service to complete unfinished kits.

Maggie has participated in the Cumberland Christmas Market and the National Capital Artisan show. She enjoys sharing her work and hearing personal stories at shows. She’s often asked by people to create something special for them.

Maggie hopes to inspire others to take up this therapeutic and rewarding past time. She will have a variety of subjects and sizes of her cross-stitch work for sale at Maple Hall.

Meet some of the artists and gardeners who make our community unique:

Danielle Beaulieu and Brian Phillips – 1268 Jules Leger Drive

The home of this artist couple features a large country garden with an exquisite perennial plant collection enhanced by many sculptures and architectural structures. Danielle started the garden soon after she purchased the vacant lot in 1997, bringing choice plants from her former home. Three years later, the house that she designed was completed.

The garden represents 25 years of dedicated effort, reflecting principles of design, artistic vision and harmonious colour throughout the seasons. Danielle prefers a calm garden, with blue and mauve and very little yellow. Her favourite plants are hostas, peonies, geraniums, iris and daylily. Danielle’s approach to garden design evolved after she took up watercolour painting ten years ago. There is more emphasis on patterns and texture, with pathways that lead the eye.

Originally intended as a hobby for her retirement, Danielle’s art career took off. She now paints several hours each day, dividing her time between art and gardening during spring and summer.

An award-winning watercolourist, Danielle is known for her paintings of antiques and everyday items with a story to tell. Danielle draws upon her emotions, memories and experiences when portraying these deeply nostalgic subjects. She uses a multi-layer glazing technique, with up 10 layers of transparent watercolour, to delicately modulate the colours. Paintings can take many weeks to complete. More recently, Danielle has begun painting close views of nature, such as ripples on water and rocks. Danielle is an elected member of the Society of Canadian Artists. Many of her paintings will be available for sale.

Brian had three different working careers: baking, information technology, and building maintenance. He’s able to build and repair most things, so he creates whatever is needed for the garden.

Ten years ago, Brian was inspired to take up marquetry, which combines paper-thin veneers from exotic wood to create unique artwork for the wall. Rather than use paint, Brian lets the wood grain and its distinctive colours provide all of the details necessary. His favourite subjects are barns, birds and images with a written message. Brian will have a variety of his marquetry work for sale.

Joan Kallio - Maple Hall, 2552 Old Montreal Road

Early in life, Joan Kallio recognized the importance of photography for recording important people and events. Her grandmother kept treasured family photos in a suitcase right beside the door in case of a fire. This memory made a lasting impression on Joan, who photographs important family events and milestones for her children and grandchildren.

Joan and her husband Bryan have lived in Cumberland for 36 years. She began pursuing photography as an amateur in 2008, while working as a psychiatric nurse at the Royal Ottawa Hospital. By chance she found some blank card stock and mounted some of her photographs to show her co-workers. The project snowballed and Joan now sells her cards and framed photos at a number of art shows, markets and special events around Ottawa.

Her main subjects are birds, nature and rural scenes – especially old buildings. Joan describes herself as a “barn chaser” who has been known to interrupt road trips whenever she spots a particularly interesting building. She roams the countryside to find her subjects, with snowy owls being a particular favourite. Joan has photographed bald eagles, snowy owls, killdeer and snow buntings in St. Isidore. She also takes her camera to Mud Lake in Britannia and the Fletcher Wildlife Garden regularly.

Joan invested in a camera with a large telephoto lens for photographing birds and also has two digital cameras, always trying to keep one handy. Joan will display her cards and framed photos for sale at Maple Hall.

Laura Lyons and Jeff Inniger - 961 Kevin Crescent
Laura started Backyard Blooms two years ago, creating distinctive bouquets from her home cutting garden. She also makes small stained-glass pieces and botanical themed works in air-dry clay. Laura enjoys being creative and funds her “gardening habit” through craft.

Laura, Jeff and their dog Luna moved to Cumberland three years ago from urban Ottawa. She describes herself as a city girl, but Jeff always wanted to live in the country. Having a larger yard provides space for Luna to run and for many beds of flowers.

Laura is an environmental advisor in the federal government, while Jeff has a home renovation business. Their garden focuses on cut flowers, greens for bouquets and environmentally friendly plants. Laura grows 60 types of peonies, exotic tulips and has five beds of annuals.

Laura studied horticulture and floral design in college and someday hopes to train as a Master Gardener. She enjoys advising friends on gardens and landscape design. The garden is a work in progress with plans to expand in future. Laura will have some of her bouquets and stained-glass items for sale at the event.

Judy Conn – Maple Hall, 2552 Old Montreal Road

Judy Conn is driven by bright, bold colours and brings a sense of joy and whimsy into her artwork. She lives on a large rural property in Cheney with her wood-worker husband Paul Charron. She believes it is a gift to be wired to want to create art. Now retired, she has a chance to do more of what she loves. Her favourite subjects are flowers, birds and animals, rugged landscapes, nostalgic rural scenes and misty trees.

Travels to New England introduced Judy to folk art style hooked rugs. Once she discovered the punch needle style of rug hooking, she couldn’t get enough of it. In 2012, Judy was one of the first students to attend workshops in Vermont with Amy Oxford, the inventor of the Oxford punch needle. She became a certified Oxford punch needle instructor in 2016. Judy began dying her own yarn and completed many hooked rugs and cushions.

When neck strain forced her to give up rug hooking, Judy turned to watercolour painting as a new medium. After attending a watercolour course at the Ottawa School of Art, Judy continued to grow her skills by doing online tutorials. She found this to be the most comfortable and rewarding method of learning.

“Watercolour is not an easy medium, which is part of why I like it. You need a quiet environment and have to practise every day.” Constantly exploring new techniques and materials, Judy has begun introducing pastel, gouache and coloured pencil to her work. She will have framed watercolour paintings for sale as well as her hooked rugs and cushions.
