Across the internet I see this idea that making and sharing art during times of social upheaval and darkness feels frivolous and I admit that I also have had that feeling but then I realized that this notion is (in my opinion) incorrect. Art has evolved alongside humans since we were gathering in caves and making tools. Art is a tool of our survival and while it doesn’t ~necessarily~ save lives, creativity helps us to keep going which is in a way saving our lives.
Making, creating, ideating and sharing our lived experience through art is essential to continuing through these moments. Artists are observers, documenters and creators of the world we inhabit. Art tells the story of the world and we have been doing this for millennia.
I have waaaaaaaay more to say about this and I’m planning to write a mini essay on it but for right now, if you are struggling with feeling like making and sharing art is frivolous in dark times I invite you to consider this not the first time humanity has experienced the blackness of greed and the destruction greed begets, and through every moment of history, art has endured.
Thoughts?
