Across the internet I see this idea that making and sharing art during times of social upheaval and darkness feels frivolous and I admit that I also have had that feeling but then I realized that this notion is (in my opinion) incorrect. Art has evolved alongside humans since we were gathering in caves and making tools. Art is a tool of our survival and while it doesn’t ~necessarily~ save lives, creativity helps us to keep going which is in a way saving our lives.
Making, creating, ideating and sharing our lived experience through art is essential to continuing through these moments. Artists are observers, documenters and creators of the world we inhabit. Art tells the story of the world and we have been doing this for millennia.

I have waaaaaaaay more to say about this and I’m planning to write a mini essay on it but for right now, if you are struggling with feeling like making and sharing art is frivolous in dark times I invite you to consider this not the first time humanity has experienced the blackness of greed and the destruction greed begets, and through every moment of history, art has endured.

Thoughts?

Hello and blessings for a new year! I am ever so slowly unwinding myself from holiday mode and easing back into a work schedule.
I hope you all had some sweet moments of joy, ⭒ magic & rest over the holidays and are going at the pace you need right now.

I want to take a quick moment to thank everywhere who supported me and my business in 2025. It was a happily productive year for December Studio and looking back I am filled with so many great memories of the events I attended and the new art and items I created.
In the spring of 2026 I will mark ten (!!!) years since I left my job and started working for myself full time and while it hasn’t been solely making money through my artwork, last year got me so much closer to that goal and it’s because of all of you (plus many others not reading this) who have helped me get there.

I have dreamed of this job since I was about 7 years old. I have always known even before that age that I needed to be free to express myself in some creative, imaginative way. If you ask any artist or creative person they will likely tell you they always had something pulling them into their imagination and a deep compulsion to create.
We don’t chose the creative life, it chooses us! Something that intense feels like misery when you are unable to pursue it, so believe me when I tell you I am so incredibly grateful to everyone who has supported this journey of mine. You are all part of this dream and that’s what being in community is about.

In this new year I want to get back to sharing more of my whimsical self like i used to do. I have felt a need to protect my joy for the past few years online because of certain circumstances but all that does is make me feel small so I’m easing back to that too.

Anyway, happy new year and just a heads up, I am sharing free gifts in my monthly newsletter this year and the January edition went out yesterday. If you’d like to receive it, sign up anytime this month and I will send you the freebie. It’s a year’s worth of punch cards you download & can print out to help you track any goal or whatever you want to document this year. See slide two of this post for an example.
