Day 1 of youth boys with KHS.

With the community on a boil water advisory, the boys bringing river water to the elders wasn’t just a nice gesture — it was real service.

You can see how happy the elders felt. To have youth think of them, go out to the river, and bring that water back... that’s respect, that’s love, that’s community taking care of each other.

And for the boys too — they got to feel what it means to help. No fish, but they came home with something better: knowing they made the elders smile and feel cared for.

It’s such a joy for KHS staff just by taking them out there. Practical help + listening to advice + being on the land. We really enjoyed our day at the river also thank you to our amazing team Yvonne and Aggiu. Thank you!

KHS welcomes so many visitors throughout the year. Some bring gifts, and others come to learn how Inuit eat our traditional foods. Today we were gifted piffi and had the chance to show our visitors how we eat it. It’s special to share our food and culture with people who want to learn.

Piffi is dried fish — a traditional food that has sustained Inuit on the land for generations.

We had the privilege of going with Max and his crew to visit an archaeological site. Our elders and staff joined us and shared stories and memories.

We got to see an old campsite and learn about how our ancestors lived on the land. Days like this remind us why it’s so important to pass knowledge to the next generation.

Thank you to Max, his crew, our elders, and staff for making it happen.

KHS staff and elders spent the morning with Guelph University students studying water and how to clean waste water at CHARS this morning, very interesting.

Kitikmeot Heritage Society was lucky to spend time on the land today. We recorded Inuinnaqtun language with elders and UQAM partners, enjoyed the beautiful weather and scenery, tried our luck at Arctic char fishing, and had good conversations all around. Quana to everyone who shared their time and knowledge, and quanakpiaq to the cooks for the delicious meal.
