Did you know Come From Away is actually based on a real story?

When an unexpected disaster halted air travel around the world, thousands of passengers were stranded far from home. In Gander, Newfoundland, the local community opened their doors, shared what they had, and welcomed strangers as neighbours.

This production brings that story of resilience, kindness, and unexpected friendship to the Theatre Calgary stage — inspired by real people and real moments that still feel deeply powerful today.

So yes, you’ll meet our Bob, Claude, Bonnie, Janice, and many others — characters rooted in the real people of Gander and the travellers whose lives were changed there.

What could be better than a story about real people, real kindness, and a town that reminded the world what it means to show up for one another?

Last week, we had our Dance for Singers and Actors Intensive with Jesse Robb, the Director & Choreographer of Come From Away at Theatre Calgary.

Jesse brought so much heart, energy, and generosity into the room, supporting our local artists, answering their questions, and helping each person feel more confident in their work. The intensive wrapped up with a fun, high-energy dance combo that had the whole room moving.

We’re so grateful to Jesse for sharing his time, talent, and care with Calgary’s arts community.

Our promotional photoshoot for Come From Away didn’t go exactly as planned — in the best way.

We knew it would be exciting to have so many people from this production in one room, but we didn’t expect it to turn into such a fun, joyful moment. With a cast this full of personality, heart, and incredible talent, the energy behind the scenes felt just as special as the story we’re getting ready to share on stage.

The photos turned out beautifully, and we can’t wait for you to meet the people bringing this all-new production to life at Theatre Calgary.

🌲🪨Come with us to the Meet & Greet for Come From Away🪨🌲

This is where we gather the whole team for the first time, introduce ourselves, and officially begin the journey of bringing this story to life.

We also have a Theatre Calgary tradition, started by Stafford Arima, where each person answers a question while introducing themselves.

For Come From Away, the question was:
Where were you on September 11, 2001?

Some of us were at school.
Some of us were at work.
Some of us were with family.

And some members of our team were in New York.

But the characters in this show?
We know exactly where they were.
They were in Gander, Newfoundland — opening their doors, helping strangers, and proving how much kindness can matter when the world suddenly stops.

And if you feel like being part of it, there’s still time to get a last-minute ticket for tonight’s performance.
