🇨🇦 Peaks + Prairies launched on Canada Day 2021, so we couldn't think of a better way to mark our 5th Anniversary than with this recent performance of the Canadian Anthem.

🍁 It's a specially commissioned arrangement by our friend, composer/arranger Julian Kwoun , performed this past weekend by our signature artist collective — the Peaks + Prairies Ensemble — as part of our 5th Anniversary Concerts.

From Bach to Piazzolla, the Peaks + Prairies Ensemble’s 5th Anniversary Concert showcases the artistic curiosity and collaborative spirit that have defined this Alberta-based collective since its founding in 2021.

Founded by violinist Lev Nesterov, the Peaks + Prairies Ensemble has spent the past five years bringing together musicians from diverse backgrounds to present chamber music in creative and engaging ways. Since its inception, the ensemble has performed throughout Southern Alberta, appearing at venues and series including Calgary’s Instrumental Society concert series, the National Music Centre, the King Eddy, artsPlace Canmore, ProArts Society, and Live from the Rockies in Banff, while also undertaking regional tours that have connected audiences across the province.

The 5th anniversary concert reflects the ensemble’s broad artistic vision through a richly varied programme spanning centuries and continents. Audiences will hear selections from J. S. Bach’s Goldberg Variations arranged for string trio, Handel and Halvorsen’s virtuosic Passacaglia for violin and viola, chamber works by Dohnányi, Richard Strauss, Enescu, and Hans Krása, as well as Piazzolla’s passionate Verano Porteño from The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires.

We are excited to share information about upcoming concerts in Calgary and Banff featuring three of CPM’s Dick Matthews Young Artist Development Program alumni. Cellist Andrew Tai-Soon Park is a three-time alumnus, having been a member of YADP in 2016-17, 2017-18 as part of the Walden Trio and in 2019-20. Violist Tilman Sandvoss participated between 2018 and 2020; pianist Nikolai Nesterov participated between 2020 and 2022.

This 5th anniversary concert of Peaks + Prairies also features violinists Solana Freehold and Lev Nesterov. The Calgary concert takes place at the Mamdani Opera Centre (1315 7 St SW) on Saturday, June 27th from 2 PM to 4 PM. The Banff concert will be held at St George in the Pines Anglican Church (100 Beaver Street) on Sunday, June 28th from 2 PM to 4 PM.
