What happens when beauty standards, insecurity and perfectionism spiral into something horrifyingly funny?

In *Fivehead*, writer and creator Maddy Foley transforms deeply personal experiences with body image, anxiety and self-perception into a darkly comedic, unsettling story that blurs the line between horror and humour.

Following the short film’s premiere in TIFF’s Short Cuts programme, REELway Editor Shwayta Sharma sits down with Foley to discuss the inspiration behind the film, the challenge of balancing comedy with horror, and the creative ingenuity it took to bring the fully self-funded project to life on a shoestring budget.

From turning personal struggles into art to confronting the absurdity of societal beauty standards, Foley opens up about creating a film that is as uncomfortable as it is entertaining.

In conversation with Shwayta Sharma, filmmaker Anubhav Singh reflects on his journey from New Delhi to the Canadian film industry, the power of socially conscious filmmaking, and the real-life experiences that inspire his work.

His latest short, ‘City of Bystanders’, uses a neo-noir mystery to explore the exploitation of international students and immigrant workers in Canada. Our October cover story features (Shamier Anderson), actor, director, philanthropist, and one of Canada’s most dynamic screen talents.

In an exclusive conversation with (Rachel Martin), Anderson opens up about his TIFF directorial debut short, ‘Call Me Tim’ , representation, his love for Canada and the outdoors, building platforms for Black Canadian creatives, and the importance of betting on yourself.

In ‘Marie Madeleine’, filmmaker explores truth, transformation, identity, and the difficult journey toward liberation. Through a deeply personal and powerful story, Généus examines what happens when we confront the past and find the courage to tell the truth.

As part of our REELway TIFF 2026 Special Issue, Shwayta Sharma spoke with Généus about the making of ‘Marie Madeleine’, the themes that shaped the film, and the idea that confronting what binds us can ultimately become a path toward freedom.

What does it mean to be young, vulnerable, and trying to understand yourself in an increasingly divided world?

In ‘The Lion Does Not Concern Himself’, writer-director and actor explore modern masculinity, digital culture, romance, and the awkwardness of genuine connection through Danny, a young man navigating what it means to be a man today.

With humour, heart, and a distinctly Toronto setting, the TIFF-premiering short finds humanity in the spaces between identity, vulnerability, and connection.

In conversation with Asis Sethi, Kahn and Hashmi discuss building Danny, their creative chemistry, the film’s exploration of the gender divide, and even the challenges of shooting a pivotal scene in the middle of a Canadian winter.

What happens when the tradition you love begins to ask you to give up the life you want?

Written and directed by Kalainithan Kalaichelvan, ‘Till The Milk Runs Dry’ follows Madhu, a Bharatanatyam dancer whose carefully constructed world is disrupted, forcing her to confront the tension between devotion, tradition, identity, and the freedom to choose her own path.

In our TIFF 2026 issue, Shwayta Sharma speaks with Kalaichelvan and producers Alison Almeida and Shaista Roshan about tradition, cultural specificity, filmmaking in India, the evolution of their creative partnership, and what it means to return to TIFF with a story that refuses to compromise its identity.

Returning to TIFF after ‘Karupy’, Kalaichelvan takes a deeply interior approach to storytelling, using movement, silence, and atmosphere to explore what happens when cultural inheritance and personal autonomy collide.

‘Till The Milk Runs Dry’ premiered at TIFF 2026 on September 14.
