The surreal graveyards of abandoned amusement parks pique our curiosity with their juxtaposition of once pulsating kinetic energy eerily frozen in time.

Trashed by trespassers, tagged by vandals and reclaimed by Mother Nature, the deteriorating and collapsing Ferris wheels, carousels and roller coasters transform with each passing season into rusting and rotting still-life portraits of benign neglect.

The once brightly colored playgrounds of whirling rides, turreted castles and bizarre attractions were inevitably brought low by some combination of bad planning, poor timing, negligent management, financial ruin, changing times, ill-conceived ideas, natural disaster or even man-made tragedy.

Some of the deserted theme parks operated for a century or more. Others never opened their doors to the public. Most closed in the past three decades

Rainbow Ferris Wheel

The Rainbow was an new idea as well as a new name for a wheel

A working model of the Rainbow Pleasure Wheel was on display at the Lane Ends Hotel to gather a interest in the amusement ride

The ride was an 80ft high 16ft wide steel wheel which had two endless narrow gauge tracks running inside. Twenty passengers were seated in four large, comfortably-upholstered cars, two on each track, which then passed into a “tunnel” in absolute darkness “amid a tumult of mechanically-produced noises and thunder, weird and unearthly screams, electrically-produced lightning flashes,

An article stated: “With a magnificent graceful swing, the cars negotiate a beautiful semi circle dip, 20ft deep and nearly 75ft long, with a whoop that will produce screams of hilarious delight.”

Walter Bassett of Berrynarbor built giant ferris wheels at the turn of the 20th Century. His father built Watermouth Castle. Together they could have started a theme park.

While George Ferris Jr is credited with creating the first giant Ferris Wheel in 1893, he only built one. Walter Bassett built the next four.

Bassett was a former Royal Navy Lieutenant who retired in 1887 and studied as engineer. He joined the prestigious engineering firm of Maudslay, Sons & Field becoming the Managing Director in 1891. One of Bassett’s young engineers was H. Cecil Booth, the inventor of the vacuum cleaner.

Bassett was inspired by Ferris Jr’s Wheel at the Chicago Exposition of 1893. He built the Big Wheel at Earl’s Court in London (1895), Blackpool’s Gigantic Wheel (1896), the Wiener Riesenrad at Vienna (1897) and the Paris Gigantic Wheel (1899). These ranged in height from 65 to 100 metres. Today the London Eye stands at 140 metres.
At a mere 65 metres the Weiner Riesenrad was the world’s tallest ferris wheel for 65 years.

Today it is a major tourist attraction. The wheels at London, Blackpool and Paris turned for only 10 to 20 years before they were demolished.

The giant ferris wheel business hit a slump which didn’t recover until the 1980’s. Walter Bassett was close to bankruptcy and left an estate worth £17. He died age 43 at Watermouth Castle and was buried May 31 1907 at Berrynarbor.

His sister Emily inherited Watermouth Castle and other properties from her parents. The castle was used as a military hospital during the war and Emily received a C.B.E. in 1918. She began to sell the properties and by 1945 there were no longer any Bassetts in the Castle.

The Uniroyal Giant Tire was created by the Uniroyal Tire Company for the 1964 New York World's Fair, where it functioned as a Ferris wheel. Since 1966 it has served as a static display in Allen Park, Michigan, alongside Interstate 94, between the Southfield Freeway interchange and Outer Drive overpass.

Conflicting reports credit the structure as being 80 feet (24.4 m),[1] 83 feet (25.3 m), and 86 feet (26.2 m) tall.

It weighs 12 short tons (11 t), is anchored in 24 feet (7.3 m) of concrete and steel, and can withstand hurricane-force winds.

The exterior tire tread is 6 inches (15 cm) deep, with an interior volume of 120,576 cubic feet (3,414.3 m3). It is not made of rubber, but of a Uniroyal-developed polyester resin reinforced with glass fiber, which makes it flame resistant.

It is the largest non-production tire scale model ever built, and one of the world's largest roadside attractions.

History

In August 2015 The Giant Tire was first created as a Ferris wheel for the 1964 New York World's Fair in Flushing, Queens, NY. Located on Grand Central Parkway next to the Transportation and Travel Pavilion and now part of the Queens Zoo, it was originally emblazoned "U S ROYAL TIRES". Designed by Shreve, Lamb & Harmon, the same architectural firm that designed the Empire State Building, the wheel carried over 2 million people, including prominent passengers such as Jacqueline Kennedy, Telly Savalas, and the Shah of Iran. It had 24 barrel-shaped gondolas, each carrying up to 4 people, and could carry up to 96 passengers. It was driven by a 100 hp engine.

When the fair ended in 1965, the tire was disassembled and shipped by rail to Detroit, where it was reassembled without its passenger gondolas in 1966 as a static display outside a Uniroyal sales office. Later, the sales office moved but the tire remained, becoming an icon of Detroit's industrial power. Today it still stands tall as a symbol of Uniroyal's heritage and a Detroit landmark.

On May 20, 2015, Uniroyal staged an event to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the tire for members of the Automotive Press Association and other guests, who toured its interior.

Renovations

Michelin completed its purchase of the Uniroyal Goodrich Tire Company in 1990, and in 1994 announced plans to renovate the landmark, including a new hubcap and the addition of neon lights for the UNIROYAL lettering.

The tire's fiberglass cover was cleaned, painted, and modernized with a new sleek look.

In 1998, a giant 11-foot (3.4 m) nail weighing 250 pounds (110 kg). was placed in its tread as a promotion for Uniroyal's new NailGard puncture resistant tire. The nail was removed in 2003 and was donated to the city of Allen Park, to be auctioned on eBay to raise funds for the Allen Park Historical Society programs and facilities.

In 2003, the Giant Tire was renovated as part of Detroit's I-94 corridor revitalization project.

The US$1,000,000 work included the replacement of 30 interior steel beams, asphalt and storm drain installation, and the replacement of the neon lettering with reflective lettering.

Bethlehem Steel and Amusement Rides

When it comes to Steel, Big Cities where 85 percent of Skyscapers were built of Steel in the 1950's and 60's, Carnival Rides like the Roll O Plane, Loop O Plane, Ferris Wheels, Scrambler's,Roller Coasters and More were made from Bethlehem Steel.

Go to Dorney Park or just about any other big amusement park and what do you see? Rides… lots and lots of rides. They zoom, they flip, they fly into the air to where it seems like they are headed for the stars and suddenly drop with a whoosh and clatter. All this to entertain and thrill the crowds that cluster at their feet. But all these rides have one thing in common: the same great grandfather. That ancestor was the first Ferris Wheel.

Named after its creator, George Washington Ferris, it was designed to be a centerpiece of the amusement midway for the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893 in Chicago (aka the Chicago World's Fair or the White City), which was itself being held to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Columbus's discovery of America. And the Lehigh Valley's Bethlehem Iron, later Steel Company, was to play a crucial role in that first Ferris Wheel's creation.

The concept of a wheel ride apparently first saw the light of day in the Middle East. In 1620 an English traveler, Peter Mundy, passing through what is now Turkey stopped at a small village and noticed a strange device that moved on an axle in a circle held up by large posts.
"Children sat on little seats hung around several parts thereof, and through its turning motion "

Right up and down and that the children are sometimes on the upper part of the wheel and sometimes on the lower, yet the always siting upright," he wrote in his diary.

By the 18th century the idea of these "pleasure wheels" swept Europe. They were powered by strong men with hand cranks. The first known pleasure wheel in America arrived in Waltham, Georgia in 1848. Created by Antonio Maguino, a French immigrant, it had cars made out of packing crates and was a big draw.

But the idea remained small until Ferris came up with his concept of a giant, steel wheel amusement ride. A successful engineer and bridge builder, he had formed G.W.G. Ferris & Company in Pittsburgh. The company's chief business was to conduct scientific tests on the steel used in bridges. These tests convinced Ferris that a giant steel wheel ride was possible.

At a meeting, Danial Burnham, a Chicago architect and fair booster, challenged engineers and architects to create something like the Eiffel Tower that had been the center of attention at the 1889 Paris Exposition. It was this challenge that Ferris decided to take up.

We used to have a Saturday afternoon club, chiefly engineers at the World's Fair. It was at one of these dinners down in a Chicago chop house that I hit on the idea. I remember remarking I would build a wheel, a monster. I got some paper and began sketching it out…before the dinner was over I had sketched out almost the entire detail, and my plan has never varied an item from that day.

Ferris's plan was indeed visionary. The wheel was to be 250 feet high and supported by two 140 foot towers. Thirty-six cars, each of which would hold 40 people for a total of 1,440 passengers, were to be attached. The reaction was a combination of shock, amusement and skepticism. Engineer friends told him he would bankrupt his business and himself. Besides that, it would all blow over in a strong wind. Exposition officials told him he was crazy. "Ferris is a crackpot. He has wheels in his head," one said. It took months of talks just to get the permits. And then came the funding needed- $300,000 to pay for the project.

Weather conditions were bad, and the ground was swampy but finally the foundations were in place and the towers were rising. But now Ferris faced another challenge. He would need a huge axle, one the size and weight of which had never been made in America. And there was only one place in the country and one man in America and one company who could do it: John Fritz and Bethlehem Iron. Whatever correspondence might have existed between Ferris and Fritz has long since disappeared. But as an engineer he must have known that since the early 1880s Bethlehem Iron had been filling contracts for the U.S. Navy, which was deep in a modernization program.

Aware that Bethlehem needed a heavy metal forging facility to create armor plate and forge cannon, Fritz went to Europe at the direction of board member Robert Sayre. The ever-secretive Krupps of Germany would not allow him near their works. But Schneider & Company, the French industrial family dynasty that ran that country's great Le Creusot Iron Works, was more accommodating. Writing in 1883, roughly the same time as Fritz's visit, French author Guy de Maupassant described Creusot as a noisy, coal smelling, smoke filled place, "a hundred giant chimneys belching forth smoke…the kingdom of Iron where reigns his majesty Fire."

After much negotiation Fritz was also able to secure the rights for forging machinery from Sir Joseph Whitworth and Company, a British firm. Fritz returned to America with enough technical information to get the Navy contracts at the low bid of $4,500,000. Working closely with his aide, skilled metallurgist Russell W. Davenport, Fritz in 1888 set to work. The European's forging equipment was re-designed, expanded on and improved by Fritz.

In 1889 Bethlehem began the construction of the giant steel hammer needed for the forging. When it was finished on June 3, 1891 it was 90 feet tall, an iron monster with a 125 ton iron hammer. When in operation it is said to have made all South Bethlehem housewives' cupboards rattle from the vibration. Bethlehem Iron created its own full-scale size model of the forge hammer for its exhibit at the Chicago World's Fair. A photo taken at the time shows Fritz, an almost ant -size figure, standing underneath it.

It was from Fritz's forge that the first modern U.S. Navy, the so called Great White Fleet, would shatter the remnants of imperial Spain's empire in America and Asia in the Spanish-American War of 1898 and herald the nation's arrival as a world power. "In 1892," writes Craig Bartholomew and Lance Metz in their book, "The Anthracite Iron Industry in the Lehigh Valley," "the Bethlehem Iron Company possessed the finest steel forging plant in the world, capable of producing armor plate and cannon of almost any size."

And now, thanks to Ferris, the great device had a chance to forge steel for peace. The end result was a 86,320 pound axle, 33 inches in diameter and 45 and a half feet long, the largest piece of forged steel known to have been created to that date. Arriving in Chicago, in what one source calls the "amazingly short time of two hours," it was hauled up and rested gently into place. There was still much work to do and delays were common but on June 21, 1893, all was ready. Ferris, his wife, and several dignitaries got in the box car size cars and rose skyward as a band played "America." It worked like the well-oiled machine of steel that it was.

Over the next 19 weeks more than 1.4 million people paid the high price of 50 cents to glide up into the sky. For a generation who had never been this high up in the air in their lives, it was the ultimate thrill ride. And when a violent wind storm did strike the fair, the Ferris Wheel stood strong and tall. The total take for the Ferris Wheel was $725,000, more than covering what it had cost to build.

In a just world George Ferris would have had a future of success laid out ahead of him. But it was not to be. The fair board demanded most of the revenue and out of the woodwork came patent lawyers who claimed their clients had the idea first. Ferris lost his company to bankruptcy and his wife to a divorce. Worse perhaps for Ferris, his fellow engineers mocked him for using his scientific skills to create nothing but "a toy" and therefore beneath the dignity of the profession. On November 26, 1896 he died in a Pittsburgh hospital of a combination of kidney failure and typhoid fever at the age of 37.

His invention was to live 10 years longer. After appearing in St Louis at the 1904 World's Fair where it made money, it was rejected in an early version of NIMBY as people feared it would bring on noise and yes, traffic. On May 11, 1906 the giant Ferris Wheel was blown apart with 200 pounds of dynamite, a pile of rubble, axle and all.

But others copied the idea that Ferris had started. In 1897, one similar to that created by Ferris opened in Vienna, Austria. Despite being slightly battered in World War II, it is carrying visitors to this day. Others opened in Paris and London in the early 20th century.

Around the world parks sprouted them. Ferris Wheels, Roller Coasters, Roll and Loop O Planes, and Hundreds of other Amusement Rides And no county fair in America thought itself complete without some sort of ride made from Bethlehem Steel.

Ronald Bussink - The Man Behind the Wheel

Ronald A. Bussink has been a leading designer of giant Ferris wheels and similar structures for over 25 years.

Bussink entered the amusement industry market in 1985 and designed, manufactured, and delivered more than 60 giant Ferris wheels between 1990 and 2005.

The Bussink company was previously known as Nauta Bussink prior to moving its offices from the Netherlands to Appenzell Innerrhoden, Switzerland. It was then known as Ronald Bussink Professional Rides, a registered trademark of Ronald Bussink Aktiengesellschaft, which was subsequently renamed Professional Rides Aktiengesellschaft.

In 2008, following the sale of Bussink's Wheels of Excellence range to Vekoma, Bussink created a new company, Bussink Landmarks, to concentrate on the supply of Ferris wheels of 100 metres (328 ft) and greater in height.

Bussink R60 wheels have operated in Australia (Brisbane), Canada (Niagara Falls), France (Paris), Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur & Malacca), UK (Belfast, Birmingham, Manchester, Sheffield), US (Myrtle Beach), and elsewhere.

One of the most famous and well-travelled Bussink R60 wheels is the 60-metre (197 ft) tall Roue de Paris, originally installed on the Place de la Concorde in Paris for the 2000 millennium celebrations. Roue de Paris left France in 2002 and in 2003-2004 operated in Birmingham and Manchester, England. In 2005 it visited first Geleen then Amsterdam, Netherlands, before returning to England to operate at Gateshead. In 2006 it was erected at the Suan Lum Night Bazaar in Bangkok, Thailand, and by 2008 had made its way to Antwerp, Belgium. Roue de Paris uses 40,000 litres (8,800 imperial gallons) of water ballast to provide a stable base. It weighs 365 tonnes (402 short tons), and can be erected in 72 hours and dismantled in 60 hours by a specialist team. Transport requires seven 20-foot container lorries, ten open trailer lorries, and one closed trailer lorry. Its 42 passenger cars be loaded either 3 or 6 at a time, and each car can carry 8 people.

In 2008, the Wheels of Excellence range of giant wheels was acquired by Vekoma Rides Manufacturing. Vekoma created a new division, Dutch Wheels BV, to market giant wheels as stand alone attractions.[8] As of 2012, Wheels of Excellence variants listed by Dutch Wheels BV were the R40, R50, and R60 models.

Following the sale of the Wheels of Excellence range, Bussink founded a new company, Bussink Landmarks, to concentrate on the supply of Ferris wheels of 100 metres (328 ft) and greater in height.

Bussink Design

Bussink also founded, and is CEO of, Bussink Design. He designed the R80XL, which is manufactured and sold under licence from Bussink Design GmbH by Maurer German Wheels and Chance American Wheels. The R80XL is available in fixed (SP) and transportable (SV) versions, both approximately 78 metres (256 ft) tall.

The R80XL SV is the world's tallest transportable Ferris wheel.

The Origins of Coney Island’s Wonder Wheel

Many think of Coney Island as the iconic, family-friendly amusement park that remains a staple for summertime fun for New Yorkers and tourists alike. But few know the origins of how the Wonder Wheel Park came to be, and how one man with a patent changed the Brooklyn neighborhood forever. So, grab a hot dog and step back in time to where it all began…

Charles Hermann

When 17-year-old Charles Hermann immigrated to America from Romania, he first sought out work as a machinist in various Navy yards and ironworks in New York and later in San Francisco. It was while he was out west that he realized that he wanted to create amusements, not for the money, but simply for the love of creating.

To advertise the Panama-Pacific International Exposition, Hermann and some friends took quite a strange approach. The gang, equipped with a donkey-drawn wagon, traveled across the country from San Francisco to New York. Their expedition garnered attention from many and they were soon dubbed the “4 Jackasses and a Donkey.” Little did Hermann know that New York mayor John Mitchell would take notice and offer him the opportunity of a lifetime.

A Brand New Coney Island

The cars on Charles Hermann’s 1920 patent for the Wonder Wheel resembled the weights on a perpetual motion machine. Herman Garms convinced Hermann to give up on perpetual motion and concentrate on amusements.

Hermann was granted approval of a patent in 1915 that would later become the iconic Wonder Wheel. Very similar to the Ferris Wheel, Hermann’s amusement ride featured open upholstered cars that rolled off the wheel and onto a platform where riders could enter and exit before the car reattached to the wheel.

After arriving and finding work in New York, Hermann met German immigrant Herman Garms who found interest in Hermann’s various inventions. Garms was equipped with a business savvy that Hermann lacked, so together they formed a corporation called Eccentric Ferris Wheel Company and set out for Coney Island to bring their amusement park dreams to fruition.

With the end of World War I and the Great Steel Strike of 1919, their project got off to a shaky start. Nonetheless, the Wonder Wheel was complete in 1920 and heralded the new Coney Island of the Roaring Twenties. Hermann decided to sell all of his shares of the company once he saw the wheel completed and left its operation in the hands of his business partner Garms.

Coney Island Today

Among the many West Twelfth Street amusements was the Looper, a circular steel cage that rolled on a track and was controlled by riders using foot pedals to adjust the speed of the spin. In the summer of 1983, Greek immigrant and one-time hotdog-peddler Denos Vourderis decided to buy the Wonder Wheel despite many longtime operators giving up and moving on. Four years after purchasing the Wheel, Denos bought all the property under the wheel and along Jones Walk fro nearly $1 million and created what would be Coney Island’s newest attraction: Deno’s Wonder Wheel Park.

When the Vourderis family took over the Wheel, it had fallen into complete disrepair and was in desperate need of a renovation. There was no owner’s manual and the only instructions were scrawled on an old piece of cardboard. The entire restoration took several years to complete, but once it was back in working order, The Wonder Wheel gained back its popularity and became a New York City landmark in 1989.

Three generations of the Vourderis family worked to keep Deno’s Wonder Wheel Park up and running, with the new generation looking for ways to expand. In 2019, the family purchased a large adjacent property and revealed plans to expand the park, ensuring that the next generation is ready for the future.
