Kinship

Kinship A place to increase knowledge, nurture compassion and celebrate spiritual and cultural diversity in our Nova Scotia South Shore communities.

This page originates on the South Shore of Nova Scotia in Lunenburg and Queens Counties. It reflects a growing curiosity to understand more about the diverse spiritual and religious practices within the cultural traditions of this community and beyond. The stories, photos and video of young adults represent a moment in their developing lives. They were captured in an exhibit called KINSHIP launch

ed in March 2013. KINSHIP recognizes the essential and complimentary role of spiritual diversity, along side its close cousin, cultural diversity, in creating a healthy and vibrant community. It recognizes the need for increased awareness, knowledge and respect for the multiple beliefs and practices of new and established residents. Rural Nova Scotia is actually a microcosm of Canada as a pluralist country. It is the intention of KINSHIP that people of all traditions experience a sense of welcome, respect and safety. First Nations People have held spiritual ceremonies for thousands of years on the lands from which our communities have developed. Many forms of Christianity are practiced here by people from Africa, Europe, Scandinavia, Asia, The Middle East, Australia, South America and many other countries. They celebrate shared and unique perspectives on this tradition. For many decades, people among us - our neighbours - have also been practicing the traditions of Baha’i, Buddhism, Daoism, Hinduism, Judaism, Islam, Sikhism, as well as Shamanism, Neopaganism and more. In addition to these familiar traditions, others citizens may identify as humanitarian, atheist, agnostic, secular or some combination of the above. It is the intention of this project to raise awareness, understanding and respect for people of all, or no particular, spiritual tradition so all may feel welcome in our communities.
