La marmotte (Marmota monax) est un rongeur de la famille des Sciuridae.Les traditions liées au réveil des animaux dits « dormeurs » à la Chandeleur sont d'origine européenne. Selon Paul Sébillot, c'est à l'ours que la majorité de ces traditions est attaché. Dans les Pyrénées, en Bigorre, on disait qu'à la Chandeleur l'animal sortait de la grotte où il hibernait, inspectait le ciel, et si celui-ci
était dégagé, retournait dans son gîte pour quarante jours. Dans le Limousin, il s'agit du loup, en Lorraine de la loutre, en Irlande du hérisson, etc. En prenant pied sur le continent américain par les émigrants, la tradition s'est attachée à l'animal hibernant le plus répandu, la marmotte (communément appelée Siffleux). Une entrée du journal personnel de James Morris, commerçant du comté de Berks en Pennsylvanie, du 5 février 1841 mentionne d'ailleurs[1] :
« Mardi dernier le 2 était la Chandeleur, le jour où selon la tradition allemande la marmotte jette un coup d'œil hors de son terrier. Si elle voit son ombre, elle retourne se coucher pour six semaines de plus, mais si la journée est nuageuse elle demeure à l'extérieur car le reste de l'hiver sera doux ». The celebration, which began as a Pennsylvania German custom in southeastern and central Pennsylvania in the 18th and 19th centuries, has its origins in ancient European weather lore, wherein a badger or sacred bear is the prognosticator as opposed to a groundhog. An early American reference to Groundhog Day can be found in a diary entry, dated February 4, 1841, of Berks County, Pennsylvania, storekeeper James Morris:
Last Tuesday, the 2nd, was Candlemas day, the day on which, according to the Germans, the Groundhog peeps out of his winter quarters and if he sees his shadow he pops back for another six weeks nap, but if the day be cloudy he remains out, as the weather is to be moderate. In Scotland the tradition may also derive from an English poem:
As the light grows longer
The cold grows stronger
If Candlemas be fair and bright
Winter will have another flight
If Candlemas be cloud and rain
Winter will be gone and not come again
A farmer should on Candlemas day
Have half his corn and half his hay
