Three Dikgosi Monument, Gaborone
One of the things I deeply appreciate is heritage. Visiting the Three Dikgosi Monument reminded me of how far we’ve come as a nation, and how vision and unity shape the path forward.

Heritage isn’t just history- it’s a compass for the future.

The Three Dikgosi didn’t hand us 'Independence'. What they did was pull us into an entanglement with the British- at a time when Cecil John Rhodes wanted to privatize us and the Boers had their own designs.

Faced with danger, they chose what they believed was a necessary evil: colonial protection.

With hindsight, we can judge. But the truth remains- they acted with conviction. And that’s the heart of leadership. Whether you’re leading a nation, chairing a stokvel, or running a borehole syndicate, the call is the same: to act, with conviction.

“When a child washes his hands, he can eat with kings.” - Chinua Achebe, Things Fall Apart

This proverb came alive for me this week. I had the privilege of sharing a long lunch with Dr. David Magang — a pioneer, statesman, and builder whose vision has literally reshaped Botswana’s landscape.

As we sat in his dining hall, at Mana House in Phakalane, we spoke about many things: writing, legacy, and the enduring lessons in his book The Magic of Perseverance- lessons that resonate deeply with my own path of resilience and reinvention.

As a gesture of respect, I gifted him a framed photograph I had taken of him many years ago, during a cultural event. In turn, he shared wisdom that reminded me that perseverance is not just about pushing forward, but about aligning vision with patience, humility, and faith.

Sometimes life brings you to the table with those who’ve walked the road before you. And if your hands are washed — in discipline, respect, and readiness- you will not only eat with kings, but also learn from them.

Sitting on the endless white stretch of the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans, near Lekhubu Island, I felt a deep truth settle in: how small we really are in the grand design of the universe.

Out here, time feels suspended. The silence is louder than any city noise, the horizon infinite, and the earth cracked with stories older than memory.

It’s humbling, yet freeing- reminding me that while we are tiny specks in the vastness, our lives still ripple with meaning.

The other day, my friends and I found ourselves trekking across the endless white expanse of the Makgadikgadi Pans. For a moment, it felt less like Botswana and more like an episode of Game of Thrones — the one where Jon Snow leads his band of misfits beyond the Wall to capture the dead.

We had the barren, otherworldly landscape. We had the sense of being a small group on a big mission. We even had the banter, though ours was more about who forgot to pack enough water than who gets to swing the flaming sword.

Thankfully, no Night King, no frozen lake, and definitely no undead dragons — just salt flats, mirages, and the kind of silence that makes you believe the world has pressed pause.

But just like Jon and his crew, we came back with proof: not of the dead, but of how alive you feel when you walk in a place that looks like it belongs in another realm.

I’ve come to value those quiet pauses for contemplation. At Makgadikgadi’s Lekhubu Island, I sat watching the sunrise, expecting some grand revelation about life.

What came instead? The sudden conviction that those earth globes from geography class were actually onto something. Standing there, with the salt pans stretching endlessly in every direction, I saw what the the earth being round could be all about.
