Icons on Ammunition Boxes: Ukrainian sacred art in Gaborone
The Embassy of Ukraine had the honour of hosting the exhibition “Icons on Ammunition Boxes” at the Gallery of the National Museum. The exhibition was officially and remained on display throughout the week, welcoming visitors, journalists, students, diplomats, artists, and many friends of Ukraine.
The collection features Ukrainian sacred artworks painted on reclaimed ammunition boxes from the frontlines. These crates – once carriers of war – have been transformed by Ukrainian artists Klymenko, Sofiia Atlantova, and Herman Klymanko into powerful symbols of resilience and hope. Each piece tells a human story that goes far beyond the headlines: stories of families, defenders, volunteers, and communities living through extraordinary challenges.
During the opening event, Ambassador Oleksiy Syvak highlighted the project's importance, and our special guest, Archimandrite Prof. Hovorun, a distinguished Ukrainian Orthodox theologian, offered reflections on the spiritual and humanitarian significance of the project.
Visitors also experienced Ukraine’s wider cultural heritage through the VR "”, and many shared messages of solidarity on a dedicated canvas that will be sent to Ukraine.
