EARTH element 🌱

These stones were collected by my grandfather from his potato farm. When I started getting into the crystal healing trend, he took them out of his altar and gave them to me. They are clear quartz, black tourmaline, and red garnet, if I’m correct. It meant a lot because raw crystals are hard to come by with all the refined and synthetic stones sold these days, and coming right from under our home soil added intimate energy.

As much as we love collecting crystals for their attractive and relieving qualities, I think it’s equally important not to overindulge at the cost of depleting the Earth’s natural resources. The Earth itself is a big ball of energy that, if appreciated correctly, can truly heal every ailment and suffering. Moreover, no matter how many crystals you carry in your bag, if your mind chooses to be impure, it cannot be cleansed by any external object.

EARTH element🌱

This stunning blue dragon was spray-painted by the artist DaLeast at the behest of His Majesty, the King of Bhutan, during the global challenges brought by Covid-19. It serves as a reminder of the healing power symbolized by the color blue in Buddhism and the resilience represented by the thunder dragon, a symbol closely associated with Bhutan. Situated by the entrance gate of Thimphu Dzongkhag, this mural, crafted stroke by stroke over weeks, inspires inner strength amid widespread confusion and stress.

The decision to leave the stone wall in its raw form and create art around what is already there is profoundly grounding. The design of eco-art supersedes many other forms of craft in the sense that the essence of nature is undisturbed and moreover, amplified through the painter’s touch.

EARTH element 🌱

Vegan people are proud, and rightfully so. The food industry is poisoning our bodies, the media is polluting our minds, and pharmaceuticals aren’t helping. Spiritualism has been hijacked by consumerism. Vegans, however, are wise; they have more control over their bodies than most. Opting to eat what grows in the soil might seem ridiculous to those who are brainwashed by modern conveniences, but isn’t the idea that nature heals more believable than thinking a diet coke will wash away all the junk?

My request is that you try. All the nutrition we need is right under our feet- better than protein shakes, multivitamins, skincare regimens, and skim milk. For those who don’t enjoy eating healthy or counting calories, here are two suggestions:

1. Follow the rainbow: Make your plate colorful. Each fruit and vegetable offers unique nutritional benefits.
2. Follow the sun: Eat between 12pm and 6pm, aligning with the body’s circadian rhythm.

May we take care of this precious human body~

EARTH element 🌱

The outside space surrounding Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse Rinpoche’s Labrang (residential area) in Paro, Bhutan, is my favorite sanctuary to visit.🌲

It’s so enchanting, you could easily mistake it for a dreamland. While many other high-ranking lamas renovate and decorate their residences extravagantly to match their majestic aura, Rinpoche keeps it simple, authentic, and mainly natural. This makes it even more inspiring- no adornments could compare.

The cypress trees were hand-planted almost a decade ago by Rinpoche’s students, or so I’ve heard; and how tall they have grown- to shade under unfavorable weather conditions, to carpet over silky sheddings every winter, to ground the many bare feet that long to touch the earth. Trees have so much to give. I celebrate the auspicious coming together of merit accumulated by those students, the task handed by the guru, and the result that thousands more have come to bear when visiting the Labrang. We return to the earth, the very same one that we come from.

EARTH element 🌱

A serene corner at the abode of Ap Gyenyen, the perfect postcard of Bhutan for someone who has never heard of it. 💛

In this series, I will be exploring our relationship with the five elements of nature- both externally, internally, and symbiotically, but most importantly, incoherently.
Whether we are learned or not, we are nature throughout. And in times where everything we consume, create, and interact with is irreparably artificial, it’s become hugely important that we remember the term ‘nature’ is not something to seek out (not withstanding the fact that one needs to step out of concrete walls and walk towards a forest in practice) but that which is, meaning we are nature… and we cannot forget that. 🐉

Hand Mudra (on watercolor with gold leaf) by Kelly Dorji 🙏🏼

This mudra is specifically called Ksepana Mudra, which is part of a Pranayama meditation practice. Another variation of this Mudra, known as Kali Mudra, is with the left thumb resting on top of the right (unlike in this painting).

I believe one purpose of art is to document traces of historic culture and carry it into the meta-age. In an age where we so often deviate from human-ness, the power of the hands is mostly misplaced.

Did you know that every nerve ending in our body is connected to our fingertips? The biometric people surely do.
