We recently received over 70 works by artist Dave Smith , marking a significant addition to the collection.
Born in England in 1944, Smith moved to The Bahamas in the early 1970s as an art teacher, just before independence, and spent nearly two decades living and working here during a period of rapid social and cultural change. This time had a lasting impact on his practice.
His work explores the contrast between the image of paradise and the realities of everyday life, often addressing tourism, consumer culture, and the influence of American imagery on the Bahamian landscape. Drawing from sources like film, advertising, and signage, his compositions layer different worlds and perspectives.
This body of work reflects both a deep engagement with place and an ongoing dialogue around identity, change, and representation in The Bahamas.
