Jan van Eyck died in 1441.
Credited with originating a style of painting characterised by minutely realistic depictions of natural light, Van Eyck painted many religious commissions and portraits of Burgundian courtiers, local nobles, and merchants. His most famous work, 'The Arnolfini Portrait', is one of the most popular paintings in our collection.
