In the early 1980s, the heavy metal landscape was shifting, and a powerhouse was brewing in Florida under the name Avatar, the band that would soon become known as Savatage. Founded by the visionary Oliva brothers—guitar virtuoso Criss Oliva and powerhouse vocalist/keyboardist Jon Oliva—the period of 1982 and 1983 marked the foundational turning point of their legendary career.By 1982, the band had already established a fierce local reputation in the Tampa Bay area, blending the aggressive energy of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal with American power metal. Operating as Avatar alongside bassist Keith Collins and drummer Steve Wacholz, they released the rare, now-cult-classic City Beneath the Surface EP in late 1982. This release showcased their raw intensity and Criss Oliva’s astonishingly fluid guitar solos, instantly setting them apart from their contemporaries.The pivotal shift came in 1983. Due to copyright issues with another band using the name Avatar, Jon and Criss combined "Avatar" and "Savage" to birth the moniker Savatage. Under this new identity, they entered the studio to record their seminal debut full-length album, Sirens, released in 1983 on Par Records.Sirens was a masterclass in underground heavy metal. Driven by Jon Oliva's menacing, gritty vocals and the haunting, razor-sharp riffs of Criss, tracks like the title song "Sirens" and the thrashing "Holocaust" established the dark, theatrical atmosphere that would define their signature style. Later that same year, they recorded the aggressive The Dungeon Sessions, which would partially comprise their 1985 follow-up Power of the Night. The 1982–1983 era was the crucible for Savatage, a brief window where raw, unfiltered passion forged the identity of one of metal's most innovative and respected acts...
