A 3D printed section model of the Clyde Heritage Museum

The interior of the museum has a warm tone, featuring wood finishes and exposed timber structures that mirror traditional ship interiors with their intricate carpentry. One of the main attractions in the museum is the propeller of the QEII, built in Clydebank in 1966. This propeller serves as a symbol of the accomplishments of Scottish shipbuilders.

This image showcases the interior of 'Clyde Boatworks & School'.
In this vocational school, students can observe the intricate process of building fish boats from the balconies. These balconies also serve as the main circulation path leading to various facilities such as classrooms, the library, the computer lab, and the lecture hall, which is suspended from the roof structure.
The building is constructed with an LVL (Laminated Veneer Lumber) structure and CLT (Cross-Laminated Timber) panels, which create a soft and welcoming ambience throughout the interior.

The design is inspired by traditional ship launching, where a ship slides backwards between scaffolding into the water. In my design, two buildings frame the slipway, each featuring a rhythmic pattern that echoes this scaffolding.

The rhythm of the façades varies according to the functions of the buildings. The school, being a private institution, has a denser arrangement of vertical louvres, creating a sense of privacy. On the other hand, the museum, as a public building, has more widely spaced vertical elements (columns), fostering an open and welcoming atmosphere.

A large gantry crane in the boatyard facilitates boat launches, creating a spectacle that can be viewed from under the colonnade, allowing people to gather and watch the event.

Clyde Heritage Museum
Inspired by classical architecture, the design resembles a temple with its framing columns. The lower part of the building, where the circulation space is, matches the height of the colonnade and rises to create a grand entrance. It reveals gables echoing the Harland & Wolff shipyard design. The building sits on a podium, accessible by a lift.
Clad in Corten steel, the museum has an industrial presence reminiscent of a ship's metal hull. The curtain wall features slim dark grey aluminium frames, contrasting beautifully with the vibrant Corten steel.

The Clyde Heritage Campus is my Year 4 design project at the University of Strathclyde for the 2023/2024 academic year.
It is situated in Govan, a neighbourhood in Glasgow with a rich history in shipbuilding, although this industry has seen a significant decline over the years. The project aims to revitalise the area by highlighting the River Clyde's shipbuilding heritage, celebrating its technical achievements, and empowering the local community by sharing its unique story.
