'𝓓𝓸𝔀𝓷 𝓽𝓸 𝓽𝓱𝓮 𝓦𝓪𝓽𝓮𝓻𝓵𝓲𝓷𝓮'

EN: Based on a few photos I took at an idyllic bivouac site in the Ardennes. Every autumn, my brother heads there with a whole group of friends to get the location clean and ready for the next season. I was there as a photographer for the past two editions.
Water forms the connecting thread here. It brings children together, but also connects generations. For me, that simple scene captures something essential about being human: how closeness and attention arise when we don't want to capture the world, but rather experience it.
Technically, this was inspired by the watercolors Bill Waterson created for his Calvin and Hobbes books. I'm definitely a fan. You can still see this particularly strongly in the foreground. The rest leans towards impressionism, with many sections painted perfectly: I find the hairstyles and jackets particularly successful and enjoyable to portray.
Down by the Waterline is an ode to offline moments, to care, and to connection – to that light, fragile balance in which life reveals itself most truly.

NL: Op basis van enkele foto’s die ik maakte op een idyllische bivakplaats in de Ardennen. Iedere herfst trekt mijn broer er naar toe met een hele kliek vrienden om er de locatie weer proper voor het volgend seizoen. De voorbije 2 edities was ik er bij als fotograaf.
Water vormt hier de verbindende lijn. Het brengt kinderen samen, maar verbindt ook generaties. In die eenvoudige scène zit voor mij iets wezenlijks over mens-zijn: hoe nabijheid en aandacht ontstaan wanneer we de wereld even niet willen vastleggen, maar beleven.
Technisch was dit geïnspireerd op de aquarellen die Bill Waterson maakte voor zijn Calvin and Hobbes boeken. Absoluut fan van. Vooral in de voorgrond vind je dit nog sterk terug. De rest gaat richting impressionisme met veel stukjes die a-la prima geschilderd zijn: vooral de haartooien en de jasjes vind ik bijzonder geslaagd en leuk om neer te zetten.
Down by the Waterline is een ode aan offline momenten, aan zorg en aan verbinding – aan die lichte, kwetsbare balans waarin het leven zich het meest echt toont.
