Het werk van Christel is zeer gevarieerd en uiteenlopend. Zowel qua inhoud, vorm als techniek is deze creatieve duizendpoot op schilderkundig vlak van alle markten thuis. Bij nadere beschouwing echter ontdek je een zekere constante in haar werk dat op een paar pijlers rust. Enerzijds brengt Christel maatschappij-gelinkte on
derwerpen naar voor meestal in fel koloriet en anderzijds uit ze haar vrouw-zijn, haar gevoelens, haar innerlijke-zelf in zachte, overwegende bruingetinte pastelkleuren. Christel huivert van het onrecht in de wereld, de ongelijkheid, de angst, de onrechtvaardigheid, de eenzaamheid, de verlatenheid, de vlucht,...kortom alles wat dagelijks via de media op ons netvlies brandt en verre van koosjer is...en dat schreeuwt ze op expressieve manier uit met verf en penseel. Ook 'speelt' ze af en toe graag met linaire, geometrische en abstracte vormen. Dat zwart weerspiegelt de grens, de afbakening of brengt de fragmenten van het schilderij juist in balans. Wat mij echter het meest fascineert is haar uiting van op-en-top vrouw zijn. De vrouw als uniek aards wezen met een eigen ziel, een eigen 'ik' met eigen vormen...maar o zo kwetsbaar in het oerwoud van de hedendaagse maatschappij. De schilderijen van Christel getuigen van een sterk geengageerde vrouw die opkomt voor de vrouw in het algemeen, haar rechten, haar angsten, haar verdriet. Met overgave zet ze ook de troeven van de vrouw in de kijker: empathie, verantwoordelijkheidszin, tederheid, sensualiteit, schroom maar vooral passie. Dit alles vanuit het archief van haar eigenste gevoelens. Huidhonger drupt meermaals van het doek. In haar werk weet Christel de juiste toon te leggen. Bij tedere of kwetsbare onderwerpen voel je bijna het penseel aarzelen, zachtjes trillen...waarbij ook delen van het schilderij vaak blank blijven. Je houdt je adem in. Bij de maatschappijkritische werken hanteert Christel een vaste hand en durft ze met felle kleuren en sterke penseeltoets, vaak met impasto haar mening picturaal uiten. Hier grijpen de beelden je bij de keel. Je wordt er zelf volledig bij betrokken. Vluchten kan niet meer. "Art speaks where words are unable to explain"
Tussen die gevoelsmatige schilderijen vind je dan ook weer een speelse carrousel van lijnen en cirkels, een ogenschijnlijke 'spielerei' en toch weer niet. Dit is hoe Christel in mekaar steekt. Ze balanceert tussen ernst en vrolijkheid, tussen engagement en speelsheid, tussen yin en yang. Met volle overgave loodst Christel je door haar werken heen... en gaandeweg krijg je een prachtig beeld van deze uitzonderlijk getalenteerde kunstenares. Leo Lozie

'Art is the journey of a free soul'
The work of painter Christel Hamerlinck is both varied and diverse. In terms of content, form and technique, this versatile creative artist is fully at home in all aspects of her art. On closer inspection, however, the viewer may discover a certain constant factor in her work, one that rests on mayor elements of creation. On the onehand, Christel deals with socially linked subjects, conveyed mostly by bright colours, while on the other, she expresses her own womanhood, her feelings. In short: her inner-self by way of soft, predominantly brown-tinted pastel shades. Christel shudders at what we are all faced with in this world: the injustice in our world, the inequality, the fear, the injustice, the loneliness, the desolation, the flight from death and danger. In short, everything the media throws at us on a daily basis, and which comes across as morally unacceptable. That, she articulates by means of paint and brush
From time to time, Christel Hamerlinck plays with linear, geometric and abstract forms, usually in bright colours and black. Black reflects boundary, demarcation or, conversely, it balances the fragments that make up the painting in her own daring way. What fascinates me most, however, is the expressive power of herself as a genuine woman. The female person becomes a unique earthly being with her own soul: the own self with its own forms... Yet, all the time it is one of a woman vulnerably set in the jungle of contemprary society. Christel 's paintings testify to a strongly commited human being who stands up for women in general, for their rights, fears, sorrows, and their loneliness, crying out for support, security and love. Strongly devoted to her topic, Christel also puts the strenghts of woman in the spotlight: empathy, a sense of responsibility, tenderness, sensuality, trepidation, but above all passion. And all this is had from the font of her own feelings. At times, the craving for contact -as it were- drips from the canvas
Christel knows how to set the right tone in her work . In the expression of her tender and vulnerable subjects, the viewer can almost feel the brush touching the canvas: hesistant, gently vibrating... while certain parts of the painting often rermain blank, while the viewer watches with bated breath
In her socially, critical works, she wields a steady hand and graphically expresses her opinion by way of bright colours and strong brushstrokes often with impasto. These images grab the viewer by the throat: you cannot but become involved yourself. And yet, you cannot flee the scene. "Art speaks where words are unable to explain"
Among these emotionally laden paintings, one can also find a playful carousel of lines and circles, an apparent 'spielerei'. Yet, then again, she refrains from frivolity in other works. This is exactly how Christel Hamerlinck works, swaying between seriousness and cheerfulness, between commitment and playfulness, between yin and yang.
