The ONE sign it all started with back in 1986 !
And yet 40 years later, still ... true love !
SPA MONOPOLE by Jean D’Ylen (FR, 1886 - 1938)
Born as Jean Paul Béguin in Paris on August 7th 1886, the artist was one of France’s most important advertising illustrators, painter and poster artist. From 1912 onwards, he adopted the pseudonym “Jean d’Ylen”.
Through his graphic work, initially compared to that of Leonetto Cappiello, (both gentlemen were competing with eachother at the drawing tables at Studio Vercasson in Paris throughout the 1920’s), Jean D’Ylen distinguished himself from the early 1920s by employing a style and fantastical imagination very close to surrealism, particularly for his work for the Shell company.
Around 1930, his style became distinctly modernist. Jean D’ylen died on 21 november 1938 at the young age of 52.
His work will never be forgotten, since some of his advertising artworks are still used and immediately recognized in todays digital world, 100 years after creation.
