We need more voices like Janan Marasligil to express diversity, inclusion, representation matters with depth, care, and nuance beyond all the noise and simplification we see around these issues. A powerful read on the politics of literary translation & much more:

Dear friends,

We all agree this has been no ordinary year. And things have not always gone the way we planned. It was the case for us as well but in the spirit of this wonderful resilient and strong community, in 2021 we will continue to work on finding new ways to communicate with and relate to each other, and on inspiring communities, individuals and organisations to co-create spaces of discussion and collaboration that bring us closer.

In the meantime, listen to our M. Pana conversations with co-host Marasligil and guests across various industries on how to live and work more inclusively and create a more empowering world on the Not Loud Enough podcast. Hear the conversations at www.migrationlab.org/podcast, Apple, Spotify, Google Podcasts and wherever you like listen to your podcast.

We wish you happy holidays and a healthy new year, surrounded by love and joy. For those of you not having the holidays you were hoping to, and are spending it alone, feel free to reach out.

As a tribute to the extraordinary designer and activist Enzo Mari who is no longer with us, here are few captures from our co-created public living room together with migrants, refugees and locals to encourage conversations and stories at the Vienna Design Week in 2015.

We built and personalised with paint, upholstery and fabrics Enzo Mari's famous Sedia 1 Chair, designed as an example of "Autoprogettazione" in 1974, which touches on the DIY construction of furniture, thanks to a workshop performance curated by the amazing Alice Stori Liechtenstein.

The project was a collaboration between migrationlab, Dominik Nostitz, Verein08 and curator Alice Stori Liechtenstein:

Enzo Mari has been a great inspiration to our work and will remain a reference in the design world for generations to come.

Our founder and director Laura M. Pana in conversation with Solidarité Laïque this morning. About the work we have been doing to bring people together and spark authentic conversations on migration through the co-creation of public living rooms and its significance today. Also this was the first time we talked about Migrationlab in French. Many thanks to the wonderful Solidarité Laïque team for the opportunity. Stay tuned, we will come back with the entire interview soon.

Last week, September 18 and 19, we took part in the Sub-regional workshop on communication on migration at city level with representatives from North Africa and Middle East, hosted by the Municipality of Tunis. Our founder & director Laura M. Pana moderated the event, which brought together communications specialists, cities and city associations to discuss how to rebalance the narratives on migration, identify main challenges and opportunities relating to communications at the local level, share good practices and extract key lessons.

The event is part of the Mediterranean City to City Migration (MC2CM) project by International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD) in collaboration with United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) and UN-Habitat. MC2CM contributes to improved migration governance at local level in cities in Europe and in the Southern Mediterranean, with a specific focus on integration and inclusion, and migrants’ access to rights and services.

Thank you ICMPD for a wonderful collaboration, UCLG for the photos and all participants for a productive exchange.

We are so honoured to have our collaborative work together with migrants, refugees and locals across Europe mentioned as one of the most exciting innovations in social design that responds to the refugee crisis in Alice Rawsthorn's latest book "Design as an Attitude". Written by one of the world’s leading design and culture commentators, London-based critic and New York Times contributor, Design as an Attitude explains how design is responding to an age of intense economic, political, social and ecological instability by exploring the most dynamic developments in contemporary design and assessing their impact on our lives now and in the future. You'll find us at page 138 and 167.

Policy makers, local authorities, national governments, EU, civil society, business sector. Co-creation is the key, so let’s work together! Thank you Ashoka Belgium for the invitation and great event.

"Whatever interests you in life, whatever cause you would like to fight for, no matter how crazy it sounds, no matter how difficult it feels, just go for it. You have no idea what an amazing journey awaits you!" Laura M. Pana

What a meaningful time we had at the Leadership Stories: Ordinary People. Extraordinary Leaders, beautifully organised by Amaia Sunnyside and Andrew Bidnell, co-founders of InsideOut Adventure, last Thursday, April 26 in Vienna. We were very happy to share the stage with some amazing people Juan Dual, Oscar Cardiach, and Liz King. Thank you all for coming to listen to our stories and to share your thoughts with us. And many thanks to our host Dominik Nostitz, Verein 08. Next event takes place on May 17, 18.30 at the University of Deusto in Bilbao.

A beautiful account by Eliza Griswold in The New Yorker on what happens when a culture disperses because of war. Where its artists go and how do they continue their work. With testimonies from the Syrian artists themselves.
