INDIA | From India, the artist brought back a bicycle covered in colourful glass bangles, as well as mirrored glass bricks that inspired a new body of work.

During the lockdowns of the 2020s, these bricks took on a deeper meaning. Moved by images of the suffering caused by the pandemic in India and of bodies laid on raw-clay bricks before cremation, Othoniel created Corps de l’Inde: mirrored glass floors conceived on the scale of anonymous bodies.

In tribute to those who died, these luminous works transform makeshift funeral altars into reflections of a shared experience of loss.

MEASURING HAPPINESS | Created after a stay in Japan, the work ‘Diary of Happiness’ takes the form of an abacus made of black and white wood. Each glass bead records the mood of a day: white for happiness, black for sadness. Over time, the sculpture becomes a measure of our propensity for happiness.

“My wish is to move closer to the light and take delight in the world, so that tomorrow’s bead ends up on the white side as often as possible.”_Jean-Michel Othoniel

THE HANDS BEHIND ALCÔVE | The Boghossian Foundation takes you behind the scenes of Alcôve, a collection developed by SILA, an initiative dedicated to bringing contemporary design into dialogue with the exceptional craftsmanship of the Middle East.

In Beirut, designer and interior architect Pierre Gonalons and artistic director André Chami meet the artisans whose expertise and gestures bring each piece to life.

Working with copper and brass, these master craftspeople draw on centuries of metalworking tradition to give form to a contemporary collection inspired by architecture. Pierre Gonalons first encountered the defining motif of Alcôve during his residency in Beirut, before recognising its echoes in Oscar Niemeyer’s architecture in Tripoli.

A journey through Beirut at the intersection of design, craftsmanship and cultural heritage.

Alcôve is designed by Pierre Gonalons under the artistic direction of André Chami, with pieces crafted by Maison Tarazi.

◇ Discover the collection at SILA, in the Design Store of the Villa Empain.
◇ Open from Tuesday to Sunday, from 11 am to 6 pm
