Theatre and Reconciliation is an international non-profit organization committed to creating a political, social and artistic space to experience conflict transformation and discover peace through theatre. Using an improvisational, community-based, elicitive methodology, T&R works with child soldiers, youth, and adults from all over the world to support them in their journey of reconciling their l
ife story within themselves and their community. And then, creating an artistic display to share the process of resolution with that very community. The founder and main facilitator, Frederique Lecomte has been participating in theatre as an actress, producer and director for over 20 years. She created T&R over ten years ago during one of her journeys to Burundi. There she met with a group of death row inmates and with another group of refugees. She eventually had them work in Theatre and Reconciliation together, resolving differences and coming to a space of empathy, and finding that their pain and their joys were not so different after all. The final result was a culturally relative, systemically /world systems critique expressive, musical and theatrical display for the community. Today, T&R works in several African countries, where participants include former child soldiers, victims of sexual assault, refugees, and inmates on death row. T&R also is now working in Latin America, with its regional center in Costa Rica. These participants include Peace Studies students, theatre students, and workshop participants from around the world. T&R works 1x1 with those interested in learning the methodology. We also work with groups in taylor made workshops. In addition to experiencing T&R, Frederique Lecomte and her team are also now developing a training for T&R facilitators.
