🖤

Join us tomorrow at WIELS !
We warmly invite you to the first Brussels presentation on the research process of Ubatizo, a film in the making between Lubumbashi and Brussels.
FINDING UBATIZO is a research project which centers on the exploration of a long-term hybrid, experimental film project that blends horror, animation, environmental activism, archival film as resistance, and anti-colonial critique. The project aims to address the ongoing colonial legacies and environmental crises in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, particularly the impact of toxic mining on the health of people in Lubumbashi.
Originally, it was presented at the 2022 Biennale de Lubumbashi, at the Biasasa Art Centre under the title 'The Office of Dr. Fundi'. The exhibition then travelled to the Kochi Biennale in India and the Kunsthalle Mainz in Germany in 2023.
Today, it takes form in a series of workshops and conferences supported by FRArt (Fonds de la Recherche en Art), in partnership with the Animation Department at ERG, Alexander Schellow and his students, PICHA Collective / La Biennale de Lubumbashi, and Biasasa Art Center and their artistic communities.
In this discussion, the artists will present their findings from the ongoing research conducted during the first residency period of Fundi Gustave Mwamba in Brussels, along with an overview of the process and some artistic materials.
Their conversation will be moderated by Rosa Spaliviero (film producer).
By incorporating the colonial archive in his works, Baloji shows how the sinister apparatus of the “civilizing mission” led to the negation and erasure of Congo's past.

Twenty Nine Studio & Production is a Belgian company created in 2017 by Rosa Spaliviero and Sammy Baloji. Their studio offers all consultancy, research, prospecting and production activities in the fields of artistic practice in its various forms, particularly in the visual and audiovisual arts.
ART STUDIO
Sammy Baloji is a visual artist and photographer. Since 2005, he has been exploring the memory and history of the Democratic Republic of Congo. His work is a perpetual research into the cultural, architectural and industrial heritage of the Katanga region, as well as a questioning of the effects of Belgian colonization. His videos and photographic series highlight how identities are shaped, transformed, perverted and reinvented. He co-founded Picha asbl in 2008, the organization which initiated the Biennale de Lubumbashi. Estelle Lecaille collaborates with Sammy Baloji as a production and research manager.
FILM PRODUCTION
As a film company, Twenty Nine focuses mainly on creative documentaries and artists films. Rosa Spaliviero supports innovative cinema and young filmmakers in their most daring film projects with a strong social or political dimension. She chooses to produce films that show an openness to the world with a unique aesthetic device. Focused in film and audiovisual forms from Africa, she was a producer for Atelier Graphoui for 7 years. Since 2017, she is an independent film producer, working both with Twenty Nine Studio & Production in Belgium, and IndigooMoodFilms in Senegal, with Katy Lena Ndiaye. As a founding member of Picha asbl, she is involved in the Biennale de Lubumbashi since 2008 as a film curator and a production manager.
