This Bruges street has been one-way for almost 400 years.

In April 1627, the city authorities introduced one-way traffic on the busy Sint-Jakobsstraat, allowing movement only from north to south.

And remarkably, almost four centuries later, the direction of traffic on this street is still the same.

Today, there is another reason I like this view. Looking along Sint-Jakobsstraat, the Belfry appears between the historic façades, framed by rooftops and stepped gables. It is one of those perspectives where Bruges’ most recognisable tower becomes part of the everyday streetscape rather than a monument seen from the Markt.

For this ink & watercolour interpretation, I kept the architectural lines loose and let the blues, warm reds and ochres move more freely through the street.

Next time you walk along Sint-Jakobsstraat, you might remember that people have been following the same direction here since 1627.

One of the most photographed little streets in Bruges has a rather curious name: Blinde Ezelstraat, or Blind Donkey Street.

The name comes from an inn called “The Blind Donkey” that once stood here. Donkeys used to turn the millstones in breweries, and their eyes were covered so they wouldn’t become dizzy from constantly walking in circles. “The Blind Donkey” was actually a fairly common name for inns connected with breweries and could be found in other cities too.

But there is much more history packed into this short street.

Once, the southern gate of the 10th-century count’s fortress stood here. A trace of it can still be spotted on the wall: part of the old locking mechanism.

Above the arch is a 16th-century passage connecting the Old Civil Registry with the City Hall, decorated with bronze figures added at the end of the 19th century. The buildings lining the street date largely from the 16th and 17th centuries and are now used by the city administration.

The fortress is gone. So is the inn, and there are certainly no blindfolded donkeys walking in circles here today.

Instead, Blinde Ezelstraat is usually full of pedestrians, visitors and cyclists. And despite all that movement, this view has a way of making people stop, look up and reach for their camera.

For my ink & watercolour interpretation, I wanted to keep the strong architectural lines of this narrow street, but also its lightness and colour.

Next time you walk through Blinde Ezelstraat, look a little closer. There is more history here than its size suggests.

Some Bruges views are grand. Others make you want to stop and look a little closer.

Bonifacius Bridge is one of those places for me.

There is so much character in this small corner: the curve of the bridge, old brick walls, steep roofs, chimneys and all those wonderfully irregular architectural details.

For this artwork, I wanted to keep that character without making everything too precise. Strong ink lines define the architecture, while loose watercolour brings in colour, light and a little spontaneity.

I’ve been experimenting with something a little different.

Until now, I’ve mostly shared my watercolour work here, but recently I wanted to introduce ink into the process. I like what happens when the two meet: the lines give the architecture its character, while the watercolour can stay loose, light and spontaneous.

For this piece, I chose one of Bruges’ most recognisable views, Rozenhoedkaai. It’s a place I know very well, but changing the technique made me look at the familiar composition in a slightly different way.

I especially enjoyed leaving parts of the scene unfinished and letting the colour move beyond the lines. It gives the whole view more air and a sense of immediacy.

I think I’ll be exploring ink and watercolour a little more.
