I had my six-month check-up last week—you remember, the sonnet "My Cardiologist." Poetry is chemistry with words; I wonder if the reverse is true? Is chemistry a poetry made of substances and science? I don’t know if it can be translated. The rhyme would certainly be lost. But… there is—there are—plenty of substances to ponder.
Diagnosis from the consultation
“Are you still taking the rosuvastatin?
You really need it for your cholesterol.
And stop taking that baby aspirin,
even though you take it so conscientiously.
I’m going to prescribe something better now;
we’ll request it through the proper channels—
something more powerful; it will really improve
your health. I was thinking of rivaroxaban."
Oh, what a brilliant mind that doctor has,
so concerned about my cholesterol,
and he is kind—truly exceptional.
And he knows absolutely everything about statins;
he even knows everything about vitamins.
Without you, but with chemistry in my heart.
