On the Other Side of Silence

On the Other Side of Silence On the Other Side of Silence is Mohammad Shafiqul Islam’s third collection of poetry published by Red River, India, in June 2025.

On the Other Side of Silence is Mohammad Shafiqul Islam’s third collection of poetry. His two other collections are Inner State (Daily Star Books, 2020) and Wings of Winds (Adorn Publication, 2015). The poems in this address silence from a wide range of perspectives in relation to sounds and shades, dubbing silence as a powerful tool to resist violence and reclaim rights to voices to be heard. Alt

hough the collection deals with various themes and subject matters, a majority of the poems “celebrate silence,” since, the poet probably assumes, the world is turning more brutal amidst chaos day by day. Reality of the contemporary world is what the poems highlight. The poet is rooted in broadly South Asia and more specifically Bangladesh, his own country and culture, so most of the raw material of his poetry springs from his own land, but he also demonstrates his awareness, as the poems suggest, to countries and cultures across borders. On the Other Side of Silence might be a valuable addition to Postcolonial poetry or South Asian writing in English in general and Bangladeshi poetry in English in particular.

It's a matter of pleasure to share that an excellent review of my poetry collection 'On the Other Side of Silence' is published in the current (18th) issue of 'The Dreaming Machine,' a wonderful literary magazine. Delighted to see that my work is critiqued across borders, especially on the other side of the Atlantic. Immensely thankful to Pina for reviewing my book and publishing it in the DM.
Plese read it here; the link to the review:

It’s heartwarming and rewarding that ‘On the Other Side of Silence’ has been reviewed by Rochelle Potkar, a well-known prize-winning poet, novelist, playwright, and screenwriter. This is a review with a difference—a video review, in which Rochelle has beautifully captured the essence of the collection. Her analysis of a number of poems offers a new critical insight into the book for readers. A brief but comprehensive evaluation succinctly sketches the nitty-gritty of the collection, highlighting its position in and relevance to South Asian as well as transnational literary landscape. Deeply indebted to Rochelle for spreading the fragrance of the poems, for the excellent review, and thanks to the editor of The Deltagram.
On another note, ‘On the Other Side of Silence’ is now available in Bangladesh. Kathaprokash is the distributor in the country. One can place an order through their website or by contacting them via phone numbers or email addresses. Moreover, the order may be placed with Rokomari, and it’ll also be available in Baatighar outlets. Happy reading!

Here it goes: “Grief has no language” is published in Journal of Postcolonial Writing, the prestigious Routledge journal. The poem deals with, among others, consequences of war, war-affected countries and communities, individual experiences of grief, sufferings and sorrows, anti-war positionality, and resistance. I’m happy that I could write the poem, which is certainly time-befitting, and a great journal has published it. Deeply indebted to respected editors and reviewers! Fifty eprints are available, still if anyone is interested in the poem, please contact me.
