The Distance Between Us
Hope stood on a quiet road under the warm glow of a late afternoon sun. She was waiting, eyes scanning every person passing by, searching for Himu. This meeting had been planned for days, but as the minutes turned into hours, she began to wonder. Had something come up? Or maybe he had just chosen a different path today?
Himu, meanwhile, was moving through a training course he’d enrolled in, buried in the fast pace and structure of the day. The commitment to his studies had made him lose track of time, and he hadn’t realized how long Hope had been waiting for him. As the day wore on, he knew he wouldn’t be able to meet her as he had promised.
Later that evening, Hope found herself waiting outside the train center where she knew Himu was studying. The lights in the windows shone out into the night, and she watched as people left in groups, laughing, talking, and heading home. Still, Himu did not appear.
Finally, after what felt like hours, she saw him across the road. He was too far to wave at, too far to call out to, but in that single glimpse, they both paused. He saw her waiting for him, her patience, her quiet smile, and for that moment, their worlds met.
Once the crowd between them cleared, Himu took out his phone and dialed Hope’s number. The call connected almost instantly, as if she had been waiting with her phone in hand.
"Hope," he said gently, "I’m so sorry for making you wait."
“It’s alright,” she replied, her voice a mixture of relief and understanding. They didn’t need to say much more; a few words were enough. They were, after all, two people who could understand each other without many words.
That night, as they walked home separately but connected by their voices, they spoke of dreams, plans, and hopes for the future. The distance between them felt smaller with every word, their bond stronger than any road or train station that might separate them.
Their lives moved in different directions for now, but in each small way, they knew they were always close.
