Richard Marquis began experimenting with the teapot in 1973, blowing his first murrine examples during a visit to the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts. The form became a constant in his practice, bringing together his interests in color, pattern, technique, and humor.
Marquis returned to the teapot throughout his career, often pushing the form to extremes of scale, shape, and decoration. His ‘Wizard Teapots’, ‘Teapot Goblets’, ‘Teapot Trophies’, and ‘Teapot Tripods’ range from the eccentric to the absurd, while remaining exacting in their construction. He approached the familiar domestic object with characteristic wit and irreverence while maintaining the technical precision that defines his work.
