The Irony of Taxing E-sports: Revenue Without Recognition
The National Board of Revenue (NBR) is reportedly moving to impose a 15% VAT on the E-sports sector. While taxation is a standard part of a growing economy, the timing and logic behind this move raise a fundamental question: What has the government done for E-sports to justify such a demand?
Before asking for a share of the pie, the government must first help bake it. Here is the ground reality of E-sports in the country:
1. Lack of Social and Legal Recognition
Gamers who qualify for international tournaments still face harassment at airports, often being misidentified or stereotyped as "gamblers" rather than professional athletes. There is no official status or protection for players representing the flag abroad.
2. A Policy of Uncertainty
The industry lives in constant fear of "Ban Culture." One day a game is legal; the next, it’s banned without a clear roadmap or dialogue. You cannot tax an industry that you keep on a leash of uncertainty.
3. Operational Hurdles
Organizing a LAN tournament remains a nightmare. It is not uncommon for law enforcement to shut down legitimate E-sports events due to a lack of understanding of what E-sports actually is. Without a safe environment to compete, how can the sector grow?
4. Infrastructure Gaps
E-sports relies on stable, low-latency connectivity. Currently, mobile operators and ISPs offer no specialized support or affordable high-performance packages for gamers. Players are competing on a global stage with a massive handicap.

You cannot demand a 15% cut from an industry you haven't invested in. To the authorities: Establish the sector first.
β€’ Grant E-sports official sports recognition.
β€’ Ensure the safety of organizers and players.
β€’ Provide infrastructure and high-speed internet support.
Until the government provides the necessary facilities and a stable environment, taxing the hard-earned income of young gamers feels less like a policy and more like an exploitation of a self-made community.
