When I was a child, I used to visit my grandfather’s house every summer. It was a small, cozy home with a wooden porch, always smelling of fresh lemons and old books. But what fascinated me the most was his garden—a tiny patch of green where every flower seemed to bloom just right, and not a single leaf looked out of place.
One afternoon, as I sat on the porch swinging my legs, I asked him, “Grandpa, how do your plants always look so beautiful? Mine always dry up, no matter how much I water them.”
He chuckled, wiping his hands on his old gardening apron. “Because, my dear, it’s not just about watering them. It’s about knowing when they need shade, when they need the sun, and when the soil needs a little extra care. It’s about paying attention.”
I didn’t fully understand then, but as I grew older, I began to notice how this simple truth applied to everything in life.
If you take care of your health, your body stays strong.
If you take care of your skin, it glows.
If you take care of your clothes, they last for years.
If you take care of your shoes, they keep shining.
If you take care of your plants, they grow beautifully.
And if you take care of your relationships—with love, patience, and effort—they flourish.
Now, every time I take the time to check in on a friend, to listen instead of just hear, to put love into the small things, I remember my grandfather’s words.
Because in the end, the things we take care of—stay.
