Olive Cotton accompanied her geologist father on expeditions, and she studied mathematics throughout her undergraduate degree at The University of Sydney; she was also very close to her grandfather Frank Cotton, who maintained an early interest in atomic science that he shared with Cotton. It is hard not to see her work drawing on some of the abstract ways of thinking about space and time that were opened up to her through geology and mathematics. Objects are often suspended in an unfamiliar temporality that has no beginning of end. her image of light emanating from the heart of a seashell shares a temporality that is photographic, geological and cosmological, fusing together eh instantaneous and the infinite.

Olive Cotton and her Contemporaries is a National Gallery of Australia, Canberra Touring Exhibition presented as part of the Bowness Family Foundation Photography Touring Program.

๐ŸŒŸ Now showing until Sunday 19 October. Free entry, open Monday, Wednesday โ€“ Friday 10am โ€“ 4pm & Saturday โ€“ Sunday 10am โ€“ 3pm.

BIG by De Lamby Wulff and Peter Tilney

A sculptural tribute to the Queensland Country Womenโ€™s Association (QCWA), honouring its enduring spirit of community and resourcefulness. Created by Peter, drawing on his timber heritage and inspired by his great-grandmother, QCWA's first president Annie Tilney, the work features two colossal knitting needles hand-crafted from a salvaged ironbark tree. A giant scarf, knitted by Denise, begins to form, accompanied by a ball of wool made from over three kilometres of retired fishing rope. The sculpture celebrates collective strength, linking past and present in a shared legacy of resilience and care.
