The Setting Sun Film Festival was launched in Maribyrnong in 2013 to provide the western suburbs with it's own prestigious film festival, to promote the West as a filmmaking location and to showcase its filmmakers. Maribyrnong is one of Melbourne's most ethnically diverse municipalities and the festival has sought to be a f

estival that is inclusive and representative onscreen of Australia's diverse reality (age, sexuality, race, gender, culture, religion). Around a quarter of the festival's films are made by diverse filmmakers. The Setting Sun Film Festival was the first festival in Australia to offer a female (and female identifying) program, with a third of all films entered, coming from women.
