Dear lovely people, friends, comrades

We are sad to say that we are not going ahead with Jamboree Creative Escape in 2020.

Oh! Cry a few tears, we have.

We just so much wanted to give this experience to you, and honestly were beyond excited about the program we had cooked up, with beautiful printing classes with Burning Palms Gallery, traditional weaving with Linda Kennedy, Second Life Sewing from Annie Autumn Farm, Creative Writing with Helena Fox, an evening gig with Holly Throsby, flowering edibles with A Garden for Life, Dance with Emma Saunders and lots more.

But. Well. Clearly, there have been a few hurdles, shall we say.
While it may be the case that gathering restrictions will have lifted by October that would technically allow the event to proceed, there is something else we are noticing in the collective energy and we feel it's important to take notice of.

And that is, that people are feeling nervous about gathering in such ways. It's a bit too tricky to know, just how everyone will be feeling in October.

We have also lost some critical time for planning, promoting and getting this event ready. It's just one weekend, but we work all year round on it!

It's a big, epic, beautiful thing to pull off, and our little team has been busy behind-the-scenes on creating our mental health program, MakeShift: Creativity on Prescription, online.

We will be programming some pretty sweet creative workshops and some all day experiences for later in the year, so we will definitely keep you in the loop about them.

Thanks for your understanding! We hope you can all find lots of ways to play, gather safely and celebrate in forests, and around a campfire, as we travel our way out of these restrictions.

Stay safe, stay well. See you round

Love the Jamboree Team x

So many of you who have joined us at Jamboree Creative Weekend Escape for the past four years have left with this knowledge so firmly felt - that creative practices make us feel calm, less anxious, less panicky, less hyper, less flat. And more focused, clear, calm. It's true! And the research backs it up. Even 10 minutes of a regular creative practice a day can calm your nervous system and keep you mindfully grounded.

Did you know that drawing, singing, dancing, knitting, any creative practice, actively reduces stress hormones and promotes calming of our nervous system? Lo...

Part of the Jamboree family: Emma-Lee Crane aka Milk Thieves Art & Design who runs our gorgeous shop each year with a sunny smile.

Here she is yet again showing the true meaning of community, collaboration, and helping each other.

The arts, events and makers landscape will be fairly decimated by this next few months

Please, where you can, support a small maker, business, enterprise!

Oh Friends. It’s impossible not to be quite consumed with this new, puzzling and a little bit scary terrain we are in. We send you love. We send big doses of hope and strength and a healthy bowlful of “we’ll get through this”.

And on the other side of this difficult few months, we hope and believe that spring will spring. Jamboree is going ahead as a sparkling delight to look forward to, after a time when parties, feasts, soirées, festivals, gatherings and collectives have gone quiet. We will show you a damn good time.

And we’ll be there to give you a big hug and bring you into the embrace of Geera, the forest, in October.

Of course, if things change? We will be lettin y’all know. It’s all a bit uncertain, and that bit is hard. So keep some certain things in your day - a cup of tea, a moment in the garden, a good book, some painting, weaving, cooking, making.

We’ve got this, friends, and we are all made of tough stuff. Look after each other.

This is a time for baking, a time for unfinished projects, a time for slow cooking and experimenting with stuff in the back of the pantry. A time for favourite books, and deep cups of tea. A time for mending holes in favourite jeans or socks. A time for writing letters and leaving a care package at your neighbour’s door.
✏️
A time for reflecting and thinking of others. A time for being creative in a situation that is complex and increasingly worrying.
✏️
Creativity isn’t a cure but it’s kind of like having a giant donut floating device in times like these- keeping us afloat and joyful in the sea of uncertainty 🍩

What are you creating during this Home hibernation? We’d love to hear your ideas!

Hi. How are you doing? We just wanted to take a minute of your time to offer some encouragement, love and support as we all navigate our way through this uncharted time. There's no doubt that what's happening in our country, across the globe is unprecedented and we're feeling it too! So here's a little reassurance, that despite these unsettling times we feel wholeheartedly in the importance of Play and staying connected for our community and individual mental health. ⠀

2020 has so far blasted fear all over the place. Bushfires, floods, virus. Fear is front and centre, and it doesn't always bring out the best in us. ⠀

One of the most devastating impacts of these events is the effect on our mental health, on our anxiety levels, of feeling isolated, alone and scared. Connecting with each other (with clean hands!) is one of the simplest, easiest balms to counter this impact.⠀

We acknowledge the fear and sense of instability that we all find ourselves in. We believe that connecting in play and creativity is more important now than ever!

This is a little weekend reminder to remember to fill up your soil with something joyful. Take a break from the news. Dance in the kitchen, sing in the shower, write a poem, make something, bake, create. These things are designed to calm our minds and bodies and also connect us to our uniquely human selves.

Be kind to yourselves and others.

Jamboree: A Creative Weekend Escape was a dream born out of Rumpus , a non-profit creative enterprise based in Wollongong. Rumpus builds, connects, unlocks and strengthens community through play. Our community workshop program, workplace teambuilding, and creative mental health program connects people to joy, fun, focus and the things we have forgotten are important.

Jamboree is a whole weekend experience that takes those ideas and turns up the volume. Loud. It's meant to be a big, colourful, fun two days. People travel from all over the country to come. Many come alone. Young people, older people, in-the-middle people. People who have an art practice, people who haven't drawn, sung or danced since they were teenagers. ALL leave feeling reconnected to their creative self.

The weekend combines a magical forest setting, a rustic scout camp, a program of incredible workshops on art, plants, food, craft, music, writing, dance. Delicious seasonal, fresh food, coffee, wine, treats, and snacks. Crafternites and Saturday Soirees and campfires and forest walks and sunrise yoga and 80’s aerobics and probably a dress up box. Maybe a wig library. Definitely some silliness.

Your hosts are the Rumpus team. Let's Play.
