Nietzsche stated that “without music, life would be a mistake” and I couldn’t agree more.
It moves us to tears and to dance. It can change our behaviour and mood, forms identities and influences decisions.
Plato was well aware of its power stating there was no instrument as potent because “rhythm and harmony find their way into the inward places of the soul”.
Aristotle saw music as a form of therapy through the catharsis one experiences when listening to it. By evoking different emotions, such as sadness, anger and courage, music allows us to safely experience these states - allowing us to purge these intense emotions, restoring the soul to a balanced state of equilibrium.
Well, what a gift it is!
And last Wednesday we paid homage to its place in our lives.
A big thanks to Carlie Mills for facilitating our improvised singing workshop, nomad_wm for his amazing poetry and song, and to everyone who showed up and shared their ideas, energy and creativity.
Don’t miss our next session as we explore the relationships we hold with our bodies.
