Honestly, you’d think I’d never experienced spring before.

The blossom! The golden mornings! The ridiculous, extravagant greens! One minute the trees were all bare branches and tiny buds, and the next they were practically exploding with the most delicious lime-green leaves.

There are flowers everywhere, the garden’s going properly bonkers, and every morning there’s something new to get excited about.

I really don’t think I’ve ever loved a spring quite as much as this one. Ever.

I’ve been musing on why in my latest Studio Notes, up on the journal now.

Just back from the most gorgeous spring camping trip. Cooking every meal on the fire, waking up to birdsong and dappled light, going to sleep to the sound of frogs, freezing creek swims, long walks and five days of being together outdoors.

Despite the monumental effort that goes into these trips and the mountain of laundry at the other end, it’s a thousand percent worth it every single time.

This year, it’s brought me great satisfaction to utilise the journal space on my website to jot down longer thoughts, unfinished ideas, and all the in-between bits that don’t fit into Instagram captions.

So, to open that doorway a little wider, I’ve decided to start an occasional newsletter. Think seasonal reflections, studio notes and journal entries sent your way every now and then.

The first one will go out on June 2nd.

All jokes aside, sewing things for my kids’ birthdays is probably one of the most nourishing ways I know how to honour who they are becoming.

This year’s whirlwind involved many iterations of colour palettes, old meaningful scraps of clothing, and trying to create something that felt unmistakably like Uma in this season of her life.

I don’t usually lean into trending formats, but this one keeps catching my eye. And honestly, I think it’s because it feels so right for this moment in time.

Lately, we’ve been paying a lot more attention to where our money flows – and how quickly it disappears. Even living pretty simply, we feel it.

What I’ve been noticing, though, is that the less we spend, the more other kinds of abundance start to show up. The satisfaction of food that didn’t come from a shop. Treating our scraps and waste as a resource. Slowing down enough to actually notice what we already have.

I’m also very aware that our “less” is still, in many ways, so much more than enough. This kind of life rests on time, stability, and a lot of shared effort behind the scenes.

I guess what basically I’m noticing lately, is that in spending less, and engaging more, life is quietly feeling fuller than ever.

Finally, autumn is here. I sometimes feel like I wait all year for it. We’ve just landed home from a week camping - warm days, cold nights, everything cooked on the campfire. Straight back into grey skies, drizzle, and laundry drying around the hearth.

The garden’s in that in-between place; summer veg hanging on, winter seedlings getting nibbled, dahlias completely out of control.

And, as always, I’ve made a list.

When I write it all down, it does seem like a lot, but I know this is the season where it somehow all gets done; slowly, steadily, one thing after the next.
