S. M. SULTAN · 1923–1994

One of the most distinctive voices in the art of Bengal, S. M. Sultan saw extraordinary strength in ordinary lives.

His monumental farmers were never simply studies of the human body. They embodied something deeper the dignity of labour, resilience, and the inseparable relationship between people and the land.

Where others might have seen hardship, Sultan chose to reveal strength. Through his art, the rural people of Bengal were no longer figures at the margins; they became powerful, enduring and monumental.

Perhaps that remains the quiet philosophy within his work true strength does not always belong to those at the centre, but often to those whose hands sustain the world.

Remembering S. M. Sultan (1923–1994) and the profound legacy he left within the art and cultural memory of Bengal.

Some artists paint what they see.
Others paint what they notice.

For Arafat Hosen, painting isn't about recreating a landscape. It's about spending enough time with a place until it begins to reveal itself.

Rather than chasing perfect compositions, he follows changing light, quiet reflections, and the subtle rhythm of nature. Each brushstroke becomes less about control and more about paying attention.

His workshops are an extension of this practice not simply learning watercolour techniques, but learning how to slow down, observe deeply, and enjoy the creative process.

At Sienna Arts, we believe creativity begins long before the first brush touches paper. It begins with noticing.

But to me, they represent the strength of countless Bengali women. Behind every strong family there is a woman whose story the world rarely hears. Through Studio Sienna, we honour these women
