🐟 GIANT GOURAMI BREEDING PROJECT — SEEKING THE RIGHT NEXT HOME 🐟

We don’t see something like this come up very often — if at all.

For the serious Giant Gourami enthusiast or experienced fish keeper, an incredible opportunity has come up to continue a long-established breeding project.

This group consists of approximately 15 monster-sized adult Giant Gourami, carefully collected and established together over a number of years.

And this isn’t just a group that might breed…

🐣 They are proven breeders, with multiple batches of offspring successfully produced over the years.

A huge amount of time and effort has gone into sourcing these fish, bringing the group together and establishing a successful breeding colony.

Unfortunately, with a move now planned, the project needs to find its next home.

🏡 OUR FIRST PREFERENCE IS TO KEEP THE COLONY TOGETHER

We understand that relocating a group of this size is a significant undertaking and that separating the colony may ultimately become necessary.

Before considering that option, however, we’d love to connect with an experienced keeper who has the facilities, knowledge and commitment required to continue the project as a complete group.

These are very large adult fish, so appropriate housing, filtration, transport and long-term care will be important considerations.

🚚 Depending on location, we may also be able to assist with coordinating suitable transport arrangements.

If maintaining the entire colony isn’t possible, expressions of interest regarding individual fish are also welcome should the group eventually need to be separated.

Our priority is finding an appropriate outcome for the fish and, ideally, seeing this remarkable breeding project continue.

We actually ordered a batch of Discus last week…

There was just one small problem.

I didn’t even get time to unpack them. 😂

They were bought STRAIGHT OUT OF THE BOX before I could get them settled, photographed and posted up for everyone to see.

So if you were wondering why you never saw last week’s Discus…

Neither did Facebook. 🤣

Clearly you guys have spoken — so we’ve got MORE DISCUS INCOMING!

🚫 Invasive Species Spotlight: Snakeheads (Channa spp.)

Some fish are so breathtaking that it's hard not to admire them... and snakeheads are at the top of that list.

From their vibrant colours to their intelligence and hunting ability, they're among the most captivating freshwater predators in the world. One of the most sought-after is the Barca Snakehead (Channa barca), often regarded as the holy grail of snakeheads. Native to a tiny region of India, it's incredibly rare in the aquarium trade and can command astonishing prices overseas.

But what makes snakeheads truly remarkable isn't just their appearance...

It's their parenting.

While a peaceful guppy may happily eat its own fry, snakeheads are among the most devoted parents in the freshwater world. Mum and dad work together to guard their young, aggressively defending them from predators and, if necessary, risking their own lives to ensure their brood survives. They're widely regarded as some of the ultimate parents in the fish world.

Unfortunately, those same traits that make them such incredible parents also make them a serious environmental threat. Their ability to survive, breed and fiercely protect their young means they have the potential to devastate native ecosystems if released.

That's why all snakeheads (Channa spp.) are illegal to keep in Australia, with significant fines and even imprisonment applying to anyone found possessing them.

If you've fallen in love with the look and personality of snakeheads, don't worry—there are legal alternatives.

The humble wild Betta is a fantastic choice. Closely related to snakeheads, many wild Betta species share a similar appearance, fascinating behaviour and incredible parental instincts, with some species even mouthbrooding their eggs and fry.

Sometimes the most beautiful fish are the ones we simply have to admire from afar.

🐟 AQUATIC STEM PROGRAM — THE SUPPORT HAS BEEN OVERWHELMING! 🔬🌱

The response to our Aquatic STEM Program has honestly been much bigger than we anticipated. We’ve had childcare centres, schools, educators and parents reaching out, tagging centres and putting their hands up to be involved.

Because our initial rollout is limited to 20 aquarium setups, we want the first selection process to be as fair as possible.

🎲 HOW WILL THE FIRST 20 BE SELECTED?

For the initial pilot, we’ll be focusing primarily on Toowoomba and surrounding areas so we can closely support the centres, gather feedback and properly test and refine the program.

Eligible centres and schools that register their interest will go into a randomised selection process, with 20 locations selected for our first rollout.

These first 20 will essentially become our official “Betta Test” group… 🐠

Fish pun absolutely intended.

And there is actually quite a bit to Betta Test!

The rough curriculum draft currently contains 5 different aquatic learning pathways, each designed to run across 12 monthly modules and four school terms.

That gives us 60 core learning modules, with every module then adapted across four developmental age groups — 2–3, 3–5, 5–8 and 8–12 years.

In total, that's around 240 age-adjusted learning variations currently being developed and refined.

The program is designed to progress from simple observation, identifying colours, movement and animal needs with our youngest learners, through to measurement, data collection, biology, ecosystems, engineering, water systems, sustainability and evidence-based scientific investigation for older students.

This is still very much a working draft.

The purpose of the first 20 centres isn't simply to put aquariums into classrooms. It's to find out what actually works.

Which activities get children excited?

Which modules educators enjoy delivering?

What instructions need simplifying?

What questions do the kids keep asking?

And most importantly — how do we create the right balance between education and nerdy fish stuff? 🤓🐟

👩‍🏫 THIS IS ALSO WHERE WE'D LOVE SOME EDUCATOR INPUT.

If you're an enthusiastic educator with experience in curriculum development, programming, lesson planning, early childhood education or primary education, I'd genuinely love to hear from you.

We know aquariums, fish and aquatic systems.

Educators know how children learn.

I'd love to bring those two worlds together and have experienced educators help review and challenge what we're developing so we can make the activities engaging, practical in a real classroom and appropriately aligned with relevant educational frameworks and learning targets.

The long-term goal is much bigger than these first 20.

Once we've tested the curriculum, listened to educators, watched how children interact with it and refined the program from real-world feedback, the plan is to begin expanding into more centres and schools across a wider area.

The first 20 aren't the finished product.

They're going to help us build it. 🐠🔬🌱

🪨🌿 SLATE PLECO COLONY — LOOKING FOR A NEW HOME | QLD 🌿🪨

Apparently living under a rock can be a successful lifestyle choice. 😂

We have an established Slate Pleco colony looking for their next home.

These impressive plecos are well suited to appropriately sized tropical systems, fish rooms and natural-style aquariums featuring plenty of driftwood, rockwork and caves.

🌿 THE AQUARIUM’S LANDSCAPING CREW

Slate Plecos naturally spend plenty of time grazing and exploring surfaces throughout the aquarium — driftwood, rocks, glass and anything else they decide requires an inspection.

That said, no pleco is a substitute for proper aquarium maintenance.

They still require suitable filtration, clean and well-oxygenated water, appropriate water parameters and a varied diet including quality sinking foods, vegetable matter and suitable protein.

🥒 Zucchini is also accepted as legal tender.

With their prehistoric armoured-catfish appearance and impressive adult size, Slate Plecos can make a fantastic addition to the right setup.

⚠️ PLEASE RESEARCH THEIR ADULT SIZE

These are not a permanently small pleco and should only be considered for an appropriately sized aquarium or system capable of accommodating them as they grow.
