Thornbury

Thornbury Just like the local library noticeboard but online: this page is a celebration of all things Thornbury! Thornbury is the long skinny wedgy bit north of Northcote, south of South Preston.

We like it a lot and think you will too. Local history; pop-up shops; markets; old photos; festivals; new photos; gardening; garage sales; swaps; shops; groups; lost & found; gossip; BBQs; picnics; recipes; art; performance; people; comedy; music; bars; courses; singing; bad jokes & witty observations. Community is what you make it.

Public service announcement. Walk-in Moderna vax at La Trobe this weekend!

Darebin is a priority area for boosting vaccine rates.

This weekend, anyone 12-59 years can walk straight up to the La Trobe University vaccination centre to get a Moderna vaccine without an appointment from 8am–3pm.

They’re also doing Pfizer and AstraZeneca but bookings are essential.

The Moderna walk up blitz ends this weekend so from Monday, you can book through the portal at https://portal.cvms.vic.gov.au or by phone 1800 675 398.

💉 POP-UP LOCAL VAX HUB

Our first local pop-up vaccination hub will open on Friday, run by DPV Health in collaboration with Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne and Victoria!

The Thornbury hub is open to everyone in the community aged 16 years and over and will offer both the Pfizer and AstraZeneca vaccines.

There will be Greek speaking doctors, as well as translators on site to provide advice on the COVID-19 vaccine and any support needed.

Choosing to get vaccinated helps protect our families and our community - I strongly encourage everyone to get vaccinated as soon as possible.

Bookings are encouraged via coronavirus.vic.gov.au/book-your-vaccine-appointment or the Coronavirus Hotline on 1800 675 398. Some walk ins will be accepted.

RIP Louise Tinney. We value the tireless hours you put into advocating for proper planting and maintenance after the replacement of pipes and subsequent upgrade of the St George’s Road shared path recently. We also know you were a hard working volunteer with the Appletree garden group in Northcote. A new star is in the sky tonight.

We will supply the canvases and artists are to supply other materials including paint and brushes.
Artists will be paid a fee for their work
The canvases will be auctioned for local charity.

Pic from 2015. We are not anti development here at Thornbury, but the replacement apartment tower for this lovely house has to be one of the worst examples of making a buck at the expense of the community. It’s the only high rise between Normanby St and the junction. We need a protective low-rise corridor on what remains of original High st buildings in that strip. Save our history!

There are exciting changes at Thornbury optometrist Collin and Kirk. The practice has been caring for eyes on the corner of High Street and Collins Street for over 80 years. An optometrist has occupied The well know 1940’s heritage listed building has been occupied by an optometrist for that long, and it has been home to some of the professions very best.
Mr Herman Collin established his practice around 1940. His two sons – Barry and Michael – both played roles in its growth. Barry went on to become Professor of Optometry at University of New South Wales.
Gordon Kirk took over the practice in the 1980's and after 40 years of service to the local community, he recently made the decision to hand over to Associate Professor Richard Vojlay.
Richard himself has over 30 years of experience and is a well-known teacher at Melbourne University. He is also one of the leading experts in contact lenses in Australia. There is a huge investment underway in new optometry equipment, making this one of the most advanced optometry practices in Melbourne.
There are some cosmetic improvements being made to the premises and Gordon will continue at the practice on a part-time basis. Both Richard and Gordon are looking forward to continuing and developing the important service provided by this local historic business. Collin & Kirk Optometrist Ph: 9484 1127
