The Dawn Pottery

The Dawn Pottery Pottery Gallery and Classes. Paul also runs pottery classes each week. The Dawn Pottery is set in a beautiful part of the Mary Valley .

Paul makes unique 1 off pieces using an old Japanese method called raku, plus traditional domestic ware which are all hand painted and thrown on the wheel. We use solar panels to fire the kiln and also recycle all the clay. Paul makes wonderful glazes from wood ash from our fireplace which have unique colours. See Class times and Details below. Paul studied ceramics at East Sydney Technical Colleg

e full time for 3 years. Paul has thrown himself into a passion he has held since he was just out of school. Born to a painter and decorator father, he has tried his hand at all of it, but pottery his is first love. His designs are on sale at the Amamoor Markets on Wednesdays and Imbil Markets on Sunday. He also attends local festivals and events showcasing his ware. Paul is very heavily influenced by native flora and all his designs feature recognizable leaves and plants. His styles vary, however, with some designs painted on in glaze and some intricately carved into his work. Some designs he draws on the surface of the fired pot with special pencils that he gets from Sweden to create intricate details which he then fires. Paul is also experimenting with the 16th century Japanese firing method of Raku. Doing the Raku firing in a 40-gallon drum which he fires up to 1000 degrees. Then, while the pot is red hot, he takes it out and puts it into a metal bin full of leaves and sawdust and other combustible materials to cool. The affect is a dark brown or blackened pot with an iridescent coloured hue to the surface, that is quite beautiful to behold. Some of his designs may take several hours to create and often a single piece will take him all day to create, design and fire. “He started the kiln at 5am and he probably won’t finish until 5 o’clock this afternoon,” she said. Not content to keep his skill to himself, Paul is now starting up classes for people keen to learn how to ‘throw’ a pot on the wheel. CLASSES
