Coils and Combs was everything!!! What a glorious afternoon of crafting, sharing, art, eating, music, community and connection we co-created.
Jamaica Patwah Kitchen served delicious jerk chicken, rice n' peas, festival, chickpea stew, salad and their famous sweet potato pudding.
Kids were delighted by a fun afro-pick making and painting activity designed by Sandra Githinji
Tammy from JM Hair, Flora from the_well_fed_family and Zarah from Embrace Your Frizzique led a riveting workshop and discussion on Afro / Curly / Textured hair care.
Denise Chapman and Guido Andrade de Melo shared truth of their afro-hair lived experience through rhythmic spoken word. They were then joined by fashionista Gloria Chol as we segwayed into a panel discussion, moderated by Sandra Githinji on hair, art and identity.
Sound was provided by Zare Demus and Stick Mareebo and DJ Emperor Sativa played a litany of reggae and dancehall tunes.
Attendees were captivated by photos taken by Ella Benore Rowe and her collection of combs.
African masks and artefacts provided by Maleik Njoroge M adorned the space which Maleik curated exceptionally.
Throughout the event there were giveaways of hair products from Hawee's Homemade, Embrace Your Frizzique and The Well Fed Family pantry.
It was a wonderful vibing, family and community afternoon. Thank you to everyone that helped make it happen and everyone who attended.
