Irish National Association Sydney

Irish National Association Sydney The INA actively promotes Irish culture & interests through our support of activities at The Gaelic Club, Level 1, 64 Devonshire Street, Surry Hills.

The Irish National Association was formed in Sydney on 27 July 1915 to encourage all aspects of Irish culture – the use of language, Irish music and dancing, literature and distinctive sports such as Gaelic Football.

“To foster an Irish spirit” was and remains a key objective of our organisation, and for 100 years we have supported the Irish Australian community and new Irish migrants. The Irish

Cultural Centre (our current headquarters) was opened at 64 Devonshire Street in 1956 and became the place to dance, hear music and speak Irish. The Irish language was always supported by the INA, and today Gaeilge is taught at Devonshire St by The Scoil na Gaeilge Sydney. Weekly dances had been held from the 1940s at St Benedict’s on Broadway, and when the Irish Cultural Centre opened the dances moved there. Step dancing continues to this day through dancing classes with the Dwyer-Whelan Academy of Irish Dance.

Vale Denis O’Flynn
It was with great sadness that we learned of the passing of Denis O’Flynn this week. Denis O’Flynn’s association with the Irish National Association and the Gaelic Club goes back more than 40 years.

Throughout that time Denis devoted a huge amount of his energy and time to serving the Irish community in Sydney.

Denis’ legacy to the Irish community comes in many forms. Between 1987 and 2014 Denis was the President of the Irish National Association and steered that group through many difficult times making the Irish Cultural Centre in Devonshire Street what it is today, which is the home of Irish arts and culture in Sydney.

Denis was passionate about giving the Irish community its rightful place in the life of the city of Sydney. He worked hard to revive the St. Patrick’s Day Parade and in 1979 this work was rewarded with the first St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Sydney for 40 years. Denis was President of the Parade from 1994 to 1999 before handing it over the current parade committee.

One of Denis O’Flynn’s greatest passions was the 1798 Memorial at Waverley Cemetery dedicated to the Irish rebel Michael Dwyer and those who have fought and died for Irish freedom down through the ages.

In 1985 Denis accompanied President of Ireland, Dr Patrick Hillery to visit the Memorial and in 1998 he accompanied President Mary McAleese on her visit to the monument. In 1999 Gerry Adams laid a wreath at the monument. Denis spearheaded the restoration and upkeep of the monument on behalf of the INA and he would have been proud to see the Easter commemoration continue earlier this month with the monument gleaming in the April sun. The beautifully maintained monument is a fitting legacy to Denis O’Flynn and his untiring work for the Irish community in Sydney.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Kay, and to Denis's daughters, family and friends.

Ár lámh dheis go raibh a anam dílis.

Funeral will take place on Wednesday 15th April at 11 am, Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 50 Kiora Road, Miranda followed by burial at Woronora Cemetery.

Irish filmmaker Enda Murray looks for community support to finish Irish-Australian feature documentary.

Irish-born Sydney-based filmmaker Enda Murray is launching a crowd-funding site to raise funds to finish his feature length documentary ‘Áine Tyrrell - Irish Troubadour’ and screen the documentary at the Galway Film Festival in July. The documentary portrays the life and music of Galway-born singer Áine Tyrrell who settled in Australia 11 years ago.

The documentary accompanies Áine as she performs at Woodford Folk Festival in December 2019 (immediately before Covid) and features all the fun and frolics of this iconic Australian folk festival. But the documentary also has a more serious side as it chronicles Áine Tyrrell’s journey with domestic violence and her path to freedom which included putting her three children onto a vintage school bus and touring her music to the highways and byways of Australia for six years.

You can support Enda at his crowdfunding page:

I want to send Áine Tyrrell's documentary to the Galway Film Festival in July and I need your help!
