Newly resident at Carriageworks, Sydney Chamber Opera is a fresh and youthful answer to some of the difficult questions facing today’s opera industry. Louis Garrick and Jack Symonds established SCO in 2010 and it has rapidly developed into an important and distinctive voice in the Australian music and theatre landscapes. SCO is critically acclaimed for its innovative programming, musical rigour an

d strong focus on compelling theatre-making. At SCO we make opera with a 21st-century outlook that resonates with a new, younger audience, and that shows how vibrant and relevant the artform can be. Each year we stage two to three productions of 20th and 21st-century repertoire. Our program is a balance of specially commissioned work by leading homegrown composers, the latest international operas in their Australian premieres, song cycles and cantatas in unusual stagings, and canonical repertoire reinvigorated by the country’s most daring theatrical talent.

Opera

Mitch Riley (.opera.theatre) and Jack Symonds presented ‘O Mensch!’ — an expansive, hour-long song cycle by Pascal Dusapin, one of France’s leading contemporary composers.

Drawing on Nietzsche’s texts, the work reimagined the tradition of German Romantic Lieder through Dusapin’s distinctive musical language. Often likened to a contemporary Winterreise, it fused historical influence with a modern sensibility — moving between volatility and lyricism to create a deeply immersive experience.

Announcing Liza Lim's THE ORESTEIA

A landmark in Australian music, 's “visceral, confrontational, and totally compelling” (The Guardian) work burst onto the scene in the early 90s and confirmed her as the leading Australian composer of her generation — a reputation only amplified by her 2025 Grawemeyer Award for Music Composition.

Now, a new generation of artists revives this taut, hour-long distillation of a searing Greek classic. (Antarctica) directs SCO's ensemble in collaboration with , returning to after more than a decade.

Jane Sheldon .shhhh, , , .opera.theatre, , and Simon Lobelson take on Lim’s immense vocal challenge — conjuring Electra, Cassandra, Orestes, Clytemnestra and Agamemnon in a work of murderous intensity.

Did you miss Simon Lobelson & Jack Symonds's performance of Wolfgang Rihm's modern masterpiece Vermischer Traum? It was part of SCO's IN SONG (2021), the season of which got cut short by lockdown. Simon and Jack will perform it again this Wednesday 22nd at the Conservatorium of Music, 7.30pm, alongside Mussorgsky's classic Songs and Dances of Death. Jack will also speak about Rihm's extraordinary life and work following his death last year. Don't miss this major piece of contemporary German song by a giant in late 20th/early 21st century music.
