"Demon Dog" is the latest film to be created by Juliana Purnell, founder of Honey Lion Productions. As per the instructions of the Lithgow Halloween Smartphone Film Festival, it is a G-rated horror/comedy that is filmed entirely on a smartphone. Selected to screen at the festival, "Demon Dog" won both the Most Creative category and the People's Choice Award!

Well done to all involved! Here's a photo of the real star of the show, Delilah. Here's hoping that "Demon Dog" will show at many more film festivals in the future!

The pandemic threw a few wrenches into nearly everyone's plans, including the upcoming projects of Honey Lion Productions. After taking stock of the situation and with a lot of help from others, it's exciting to report the completion of a little sneaky documentary that has been in the works since last year.

Making Sense of Scents is a documentary about the emerging dog sport of Nose Work. It couldn't have been done without the assistance of K9 Nose Time, K9 Nose Work, the ASCW, the NACSW, Hills Shire Council, and of course all of those who dedicated their time to be interviewed as part of the production.

Trailer to be revealed on the 26th February!

Last year was certainly a challenge for the film, arts and entertainment industry. For Honey Lion Productions, that meant shutting down production and reassessing what projects were still a possibility in a world that was constantly changing. Yet for the animals, their world was still rolling. The pandemic saw many people spend more time with their dogs, but how well do we really understand them? With an olfactory system many times more powerful than our own, how do they make sense of scents? If we were to stop and follow their commands for a change, what would we learn from them about their world?

With the help of K9 Nose Time and the ACSW, Honey Lion Productions is currently in the post-production phase of a documentary that seeks to explore this bond between dogs and their handlers... and all the scents in-between!

Crew needed for short documentary film!

Paid | Sydney region | Various crew roles.

Looking to create a low-budget, documentary short on the role of therapy dogs in nursing homes. Production crew must not be allergic or otherwise averse to being in close quarters with dogs. One day shoot—date TBA, but most likely during the day on a Friday in April (not Easter long weekend).
UPDATE: We are now aiming to film on the 3rd April, using 24th April as a back up date in case any pick up shots are needed.

Positions required:

DOP*: Experience with documentary shoots and can supply own gear/experience with Panasonic GH4 desirable.

Sound Recordist: Experience with documentary genre and can supply own gear desirable.
*If you are a DOP and are comfortable with combining these two roles, please mention that in your application. Hoping for only a small crew as to have minimal impact on nursing home location.

All Rounder: Award rate. Perfect for those with some experience and looking for more opportunities to grow. Jobs may include slate, note taking, moving lights, and possibly operating 2nd camera.

EOI for Editor/Sound Mixer: When applying, please mention level of availability; post-production unfortunately will have a tight turnaround due to film festival submission dates. Please specify if you're keen to edit its entirety, or just do the sound mixing, colour grading, etc.

Please send your CVs, showreel examples and rates to [email protected] Please don't contact over Facebook as I might miss your message.

Update on the Creative Dance Eisteddfod:

It is sad that a number of years have passed since the pitching of this idea. The main reason for the delay of this event was due to a change in laws regarding music licensing and copyright, which left many organisers in this field confused as to where everything was heading, and whether these types of events could continue to be financially feasible. Since that time, a lot has been clarified with the governing body, APRA, and while there are still some unresolved issues from within the community, the dust has mostly settled.

So it is a pleasure to announce once again that planning for the Creative Dance Eisteddfod is underway, barring any further unforeseen setbacks. Watch this space!

Applications for adjudicators and contributors for the upcoming Eisteddfod hosted by Honey Lion Productions are now closed. Successful candidates will be contacted at some point throughout this week. Thank you to all those who applied.

Interested in helping to create a new type of dance Eisteddfod?

Honey Lion Productions is keen to produce a dance Eisteddfod in Sydney this year that focuses on celebrating dance as a creative art form. The winning dances will be heavily weighted towards those that display creativity in their choreography, usage of theatrical elements, storytelling and their emotional impact on audiences, as opposed to favouring technique only.

But before this Eisteddfod can take place, we need adjudicators who are also looking to judge something slightly different. We are looking for a small team of people who are involved within the dance industry to lend their opinions and ideas during the development stages of the event. What categories would you like to see? What styles of dance should we see more of? What rules should there be? Looking for people who are passionate about the art form of dance and are looking for a platform where the most creative dances are awarded. You must also be willing to adjudicate entries once the Eisteddfod is launched. Please note, you won’t be allowed to adjudicate your own entries.

If you have a number of years worth of experience in dance, you’re welcome to apply. Preference will be given to those with experience in adjudicating, or those with a background in drama/movement as well. As we are looking for like-minded people who are passionate about the prospect of the project, there will be no pay during the collaboration period, which may require a few meetings (though food expenses will be paid for) over the next few months. However, should the Eisteddfod take place, all adjudicators will be paid for their time at the event accordingly.

Currently we are hoping to launch the Eisteddfod late in the year, possibly September.

Expressions of interest close 6th March. Please note that Honey Lion Productions will be out of office for part of the application period, so successful applicants may be contacted as late as 13th March.

If you are interested in being involved and eventually adjudicating for this project, please private message your preferred contact details, a brief history of your qualifications, along with a sentence or two explaining what sort of dance you’re passionate about, and what you hope to see at this dance Eisteddfod. If you know someone who may be interested, by all means, share!
