Kia ora whānau 🥝

A quick kōrero about why your vote matters...even from here in NSW.

The decisions made in Wellington affect our whānau back home every day. Housing. Healthcare. Māori rights. The cost of living. These aren't distant issues, they're the conversations we have at our own kitchen tables.

Living in Australia doesn't mean we've left those things behind. It means we carry them with us.

Enrolled? Check here in 2 minutes 👇

An event to bring our community together and feast together

01/06/2026

"You are a settler in somebody else's country. And one of the things that comes up over and over again, especially for Māori Australians, is the tension between what's home and what's homeland and where do we fit in?"

These are the words of Jo Maarama Kāmira (Te Rarawa, Te Aupōuri, Ngāpuhi, Ngāti Whakaue), historian, former Australian Federal Police officer, and one of the voices featured in the newly released Across the Ditch report.

She has lived that tension. And she has also found her answer, wearing her moko kauae as an unashamed, unambiguous declaration of who she is, wherever she stands.
That is the kind of courage our community is built on. 💜

Whānau, we have some BIG news.

The $1 million Federal Government funding is in our bank. 💚

Let that sink in. After 40 years of kaupapa, of community hui and hard conversations, of showing up on the whenua and holding the vision when it felt impossible, the pūtea has landed.
And there is more.

Through the amazing work of our team, we are now closer than ever to receiving our construction certificate from Cumberland City Council.

That certificate is the final gateway before we can turn soil at Hyland Road, Greystanes.

To every whānau member who has shown up, donated, volunteered, mowed the lawn, attended a gala, shared a post, or simply believed when belief was hard: this is yours to celebrate.

Note to media: we are not taking interview requests at this time. This kaupapa is ours to share, on our terms.

Did you know that an estimated 1 in 5 Māori in the world live in Australia?

That makes Australia home to the largest population of Māori outside of Aotearoa New Zealand.

SMA exists to make sure our people have a place to connect, rebuild our connections, keep reo thriving and Tamariki to know their culture.
