Every neighbourhood seemed to have that one house.

The front yard was scattered with bikes, the back door was always open, and somehow there was room for one more kid at the table when afternoon tea appeared.

Nobody organised it. Nobody needed to send a message first. We simply knew where everyone would be after school.

Funny how some of the most ordinary afternoons became the memories we hold onto the longest.

It is easy to spend our days waiting for the right moment... the weekend, the holiday, the quieter season, the point where everything finally falls into place.

But life is not only found in the big moments.

Sometimes it is a slow walk beneath the trees. A conversation you almost did not have. A laugh that catches you by surprise. A quiet afternoon where, for a little while, you are completely present.

We may not be able to ask life for more time.

But we can choose to place a little more life into the time we already have.

There was a time when the back of a station wagon felt like its own little world.

No seatbelts stretched across every seat, no screens to keep us occupied, and no GPS guiding the way. Just siblings, bags, blankets, the hum of the road and the endless view through the rear window as the world rolled away behind us.

Somehow, those long drives felt like an adventure before we had even arrived.

Sometimes it is the smell of rain on dry earth. Sometimes it is the sound of magpies in the early morning, the glow of sunlight through gum trees, an old shed leaning quietly into the years, or a road that seems to disappear into forever.
