Q: What is the difference between PRACTICE and PLAYING? How do I create an effective PRACTICE SCHEDULE?

A: I discuss this a lot with all students and they are very good questions. PRACTICE is when you spend dedicated time focusing in on a specific section of a song you are having trouble with and want to improve. This can be the same for specific techniques as well. PLAYING is anything you do outside of your dedicated practice time. You can PLAY your guitar for as long as you want any day of the week!

An effective PRACTICE schedule is created by dividing your time across a small selection of criteria. Let’s take a 15min practice. I suggest to students to break this up in to 3 groups of 5min each. The first 5min is focusing on a section of your NEW song, the second 5min is focusing on an older song that you may want to brush up on and the final 5min could be to have some fun and play a song that you love.

FAQ: I am the parent of a 10yr old child who wants to learn the guitar. I have been told by a lot of people that he needs to learn on a “classical guitar” before he can play on anything else. Is this true?

ANSWER: This is a common misconception. While a “classical guitar” with nylon strings can be a little easier on the fingers to begin with, they are not very inspirational if your child is in to rock music! These days, guitars come in all sizes, shapes and styles and finding one to meet your child’s needs is quite easy. Your child’s guitar tutor and local music shop can work together to help find the best option.
