Mark your calenders Melbourne! ACMI and The Other Film Festival have partnered to bring you a series of Deaf and Disabled short films.

New Voices in Australian Cinema is a monthly screening program. This event showcases a dynamic spectrum of emerging Australian filmmaking talent.

Join us to for an evening of new and exciting films on the big screen. Then enjoy an engaging panel discussion with the filmmakers. Here, audiences will be able to connect firsthand with the creative minds behind the films.

Where: Gandel Future Digital Lab 1, Level 1, ACMI, Fed Square
Cost: Full $20, Concession $16, Member $14

Each year, Arts Access Victoria honours the enduring impact of Stella Young by awarding a young Australian disabled artist with $3000.

Stella was raised in Stawell and her legacy is celebrated in the town with a life-size bronze statue in Cato Park (pictured), unveiled in 2023 through support from the Victorian Government's Community Support Fund.

The Stella Young Award provides a great opportunity for young disabled artists aged between 16 and 30 years to be recognised for their impact on disability activism and culture through their artistic practice (in comedy, performing arts or screen culture).

Applicants must:
🌟 Identify as a deaf and/or disabled person;
🌟have created work (paid or voluntary) in either comedy, performing arts or screen culture;
🌟be between the ages of 16 and 30;
🌟be a permanent resident of Australia; and
🌟have made a powerful impact through their practice.
Applications close on Monday, September 14 at 5pm.

We are so excited to announce that The Other Film Festival will be launching its 2026 Creative Program!

Celebrate with us on Wednesday 28 October at ACMI. There will be screenings, speeches and networking.

Also, we are awarding the 2026 Stella Young Award! Submissions for this award are still open.

Hard as Puck is having its premiere at MIFF for you to enjoy with a friend.

The story follows a motley crew of para ice hockey skaters who fight to keep their grassroots sporting club on the rink. This is a stirring and often hilarious documentary.

Digby & Camille is having its premiere at MIFF. Co-directed by respected disabled artist Digby Webster, the film explores his life with girlfriend Camille Collins. A tender, intimate and humorous documentary. Experience the adventures and frustrations of a pair of inseparable lovers as they dream of building a life together.

Director, Trevor Graham, and Digby Webster are both long standing friends of ours at TOFF. Digby’s hand drawn artwork have previously featured at The Other Film Festival. We are delighted for the film team for this huge achievement.

If you cannot attend this screening on Sunday 9 August, there is also a Sensory Friendly screening the following day on Monday 10 August! You can book this session via MIFF website.

Attention all Deaf and Disabled emerging content makers!

ABC Heywire is wanting to spotlight emerging Deaf and Disabled storytellers for International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD). You can share one of the following:

✔️A lived experience
✔️An issue facing your community
✔️A stereotype you want to dispel
✔️An attitude you want to challenge

If selected, you will have the opportunity to develop your story with an ABC producer to present on ABC platforms.

The Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS) returns with Digital Futures Summit! Australian Film Television and Radio School invites screen enthusiasts to this free online event on the 25th of June 2026. This event focuses on the future of the Screen and Audio industry and the Creative Education sector.
If this interests you, there are 3 sessions available for reservation online. This event encourages shared conversation. Participants can discuss ideas, challenge assumptions and create new possibilities for the industry.

Event Details:
Session 1: Explore the intentional craft of worldbuilding and worlding. This session will examine and rethink how futures are imagined – and made.

Melbourne International Film Festival is currently seeking applications to be a part of their 2026 festival team. MIFF is looking for a Festival Access Coordinator and Casual Front of House staff.

We further encourage Deaf and Disabled people who are eager to work in the arts or have extensive access knowledge. It is also an opportunity for filmmakers to network with likeminded people and gain industry insight.

Applications can be made on the MIFF website. Both these applications close on 7 June.

A huge thank you to all that attended our event on Sunday! We are honoured to have worked with St Kilda Film Festival on this event. It was a strong screening of short films by Australian Deaf and Disabled filmmakers.
Our speakers included Leo Berkley (Dark Matter) and Sofya Gollan (So, Beautiful). Also, Irene Holub was our 2025 winner of the Lesley Hall Arts and Disability Scholarship. We were delighted that Irene could announce Nathan Borg as our 2026 winner!
All our speakers shared extensive knowledge, experience and industry perspective.

St Kilda Film Festival opening night is this Thursday. Get keen for a dazzling night at the iconic Palais Theatre. Attendees will get a taste of this year’s program. With a selection of documentaries, comedies, horror and more. It is revealed to be diverse and thought-provoking.

Time: 7:30 pm to 9:00 pm
Location: Palais Theatre, Cnr Lower Esplanade and Cavell Street, St Kilda, VIC 3182
Access: films will be open captioned. Either Auslan interpreters or live speaker captioning available. Accessible entries, seating options, and bathrooms.
